Budget Windows Tablet's

Not been able to convince myself yet, although for £70 I was close with the Chuwi Vi8 plus. Just not quite there.

Somewhat relatedly, recently bought a Cubot H1 (through amazon) which at 5.5" seems to just about serve as a tablet device, browsing etc when needed. Coming from a 4.5" moto g it is a bit awkward sized tbh.
Will prob switch back to a 4.5" later in the year and will likely take a punt on a Chinese tablet then.

I have just been looking at this model also, but I would really like an 8" tablet with a higher screen resolution, although I do accept that it would probably be a bit more expensive!

Any thoughts?

Just checked the spec. of the Windows 10 version of the XiaoMi Mi Pad 2 on http://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_268674.html which says "Mi Pad 2 the new USB Type-C port with its transmission speed 10 times faster than the traditional USB2.0. The USB plug is reversible. You can connect it to the phone in whichever way you want."

Although not perhaps strictly a budget tablet, it is starting to look like a good replacement for my old Nexus 7 which has being playing up a bit recently, and as I have been looking for a Windows alternative; perhaps this could be it!

Edit: Having now read a few reviews, I am prepared to place a pre-order for one, but am not really sure which sellers can be trusted!
Are 'Gearbest.com' any good for example... has anyone any experience of their service?

i find banggood are better for service and delivery if using expedited.

The chuwi Hi8 Pro looks to be identical to the Vi8 Plus but with a higher resolution at 1920x1200.
Only issue is I think there was a prod issue related to the screen so it was delayed.

Otherwise from the latest comparison review at techtablets the Vi8 plus hardware does quite well overall: display, build, speaker, runtime (4.5hr) and seemingly perf wise (as best as can be done with the Z8300, just edging the others by better cooling it seems) compared to its 8inch peers.

edit: Hi8 Pro comes with a smaller battery than the Vi8 Plus it seems.

Thanks for your comments guys, but after much deliberation, I have decided to stick with the Android OS after all, but have never really liked the idea of ordering directly from a relatively unknown company in China with little or no UK presence.

Knowing my luck, I would probably be hit with a large customs/import duty bill or else I would receive one with some defective pixels, or possibly experience some sort of problem which would necessitate it being returned, which would cause at the very least a fairly long delay, and possibly other problems also.

I know that a lot of folks have purchased from companies such as Banggood and GearBest, but personally I would rather not take the risk, and am far happier buying from a popular UK source, such as our rain forest friends!

With this in mind, I have finally taken the plunge and purchased (at a higher cost, I know!) a Huawei MediaPad M2-801L which is actually a 'phablet' with a SIM card slot, as opposed to their 801W which is Wi-Fi only.

The 8" screen has a 1080 x 1920 resolution, and although it only comes with 16 GB of memory, a micro SIM card slot makes it easy to add a bit more. It is fairly slim at 7.8mm and has a metal (silver) back making it, in my opinion anyway, quite an attractive, if not a particularly, cheap buy!

To be honest I have tried the onda and teclast variants and they were not reliable , screen issues, overheating , Chinese language issues, couldn't recover windows as it went into a loading loop

But recently I tried a Chuwi Hi10 from gearbest and its fantastic and reminds me of a surface pro 1 , no issues at all ..great screen , usb 2.0 and 3.0 full size port, 4 gigs of ram , faster new atom z8300 :)

Last time I ordered something from Alibaba, the courier company charged me to pay the tax which ended up costing more than the product itself.
Is this still the case when ordering from these online sites?

depends, bangood generally put an item of lesser value on the shipment info so the tax worked out cheaper, i paid around 3.5 on a 100 order

Which courier company did you use?
DHL or UPS had a flat admin charge on top of the tax, and apparently I could not pay the tax on my own.
Seemed like a BS deal at the time.

I believe it is a not uncommon practice for Chinese exporters to declare the item as a low value gift, or just enter a far lower figure than the amount you have actually paid, but I wonder how you are then covered for insurance, should it go astray, or not be delivered at all?

Also packages can also be opened by customs to check that the contents are what has been entered on the declaration.

Personally I would not wish to take those sort of risks when ordering a relatively high value item, such as a tablet.
