Hi,

This will be the first time I am building my own computer and am still a little lost after reading the threads (I didnt realise there is so much information to take in).

I need a new computer to optimise/model/back-test trading systems using a 32 bit program called metatrader. The problem is that when metatrader is optimising or back-testing, it runs the processor at 100% until it is complete.

And, obviously, a slower processor will take longer to complete the model....

Even though metatrader is a 32 bit program, I can install multiple versions on the computer and model different parameters on the same computer. For this reason, I was thinking of getting a quad core processor (and have a slight bias towards AMD, but am willing to change if needed) so that I can run 3 versions of metatrader and have the final core for my own work (very light... web browsing, MS office etc).

The next problem is that even with a very fast processor, the optimisation can take a few days. Therefore, the computer will be on (effectively) 24/7. Therefore, cooling and power efficiency can be a factor. In addition, I have no where else to put the computer but in someone's bed room (due to lack of space) so need it to be quiet.

I do not have a great need for super graphics and on-board sound card should be sufficient (maybe with an easy access headphone and microphone port if possible for skype etc).

The computer would need to have built in wireless as there is no other way to connect to the internet.

My budget is about £400 for the computer but can stretch up to £500 for an all-in bundle (computer, monitor, mouse, keyboard and windows 7).

If it helps (not sure if it will) but there is a TV in the room but it does not have a computer monitor connector. If possible, it would be beneficial to use this as the display and reduce the number of screens in the room. However, if it can be used, then a TV card would be nice as the TV is not freeview compatible.

I know this is a big ask, but any help would be gratefully received.

Thank you

ASD

AMD BD's might be suitable for this type of work but they get a lot hotter so a lot louder and also use much more power than any of Intel's offerings.

But that is a very tight budget and its not going to be silent, its too restricted.

Hi Bacon,

Thank you for your quick reply and your advice.

I have found some VGA to scart connectors on Amazon... do you think these will be okay to connect the computer to the TV? Sorry, I have never used them before....

Im sorry but your not allowed to post to competitors so please remove the link. I guess it would work? Ive never used them before.

If you wanted it silent you could swap the i5 for the i3 and get a decent cooler and soundproofed case but IMO its not worth it.

Hi,

I have been advised to improve on the cooling for my comp. And have been told that the NH-D14 is one of the best around.

Would this fit with the case? Would the motherboard be able to hold it? And would the PSU be able to handle it?

Thanks

you dont need such a monster cooler. any of the 25-30 quid coolers will do the job perfectly well
