Hi all,

It's been a good while since I frequented the forums but I'm after a bit of help if I may ?

With the new World of Warcraft expansion I've picked up playing again, sadly I'm getting by on a 5 year old laptop which is far from ideal so I'm pricing up a new build to enable me to play the game fluently.

I'm reasonably out of touch with modern hardware, my last build was 2010 I think !

To keep costs down I already have an ATi 5870 GPU I can use so I've missed that off the list (Assuming the PSU listed is up to powering it ??)

Anyway I've put together a basket if someone could take a look for me and give any constructive criticism that'd be great, Ta ! :D

Simon.

Build looks alright but if its just WoW type gaming and a budget build you could go with an offering from AMD saving you ££ and allowing you to upgrade from your ageing GPU which would also allow you to play all the latest games at moderate settings. Unfortunately I'm not too hot on AMD knowledge!

You probably won't need the SSD adaptor plate so that's saving you £5

Do you really need a DVD drive? I have not had one in my PC for 3 years now and never missed one, got an old one laying around just in case but you can install windows from a USB stick saving £20

Superflower are highly rated around here for their PSU's although I would consider getting the slightly more expensive one for that extra headroom although 550w would do you just fine for a budget single gpu PC http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-004-SF&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=2057

as for your case choice it's pretty good for the money but for the same price point as other cases is missing features
Consider a few alternatives :
YOUR BASKET
1 x NZXT Source 340 Midi-Tower Case- Black Window £54.95
1 x Corsair Carbide 200R Compact ATX Case - Black (CC-9011023-WW) £46.99
Total : £114.24 (includes shipping : £10.25).

Assuming you are salvaging the hard drive from your old PC then your choice of storage will be fine, although some would argue the V300 is not as fast as advertised.

I came up with a decent build including GPU for £100 more, dropping the DVD drive using an AMD cpu there is probably more savings to be had but its a good start, the ram is 1600mhz but is compatible

1 x Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £99.95

Thanks Murah, some good pointers there !

I've definitely changed the case to the Corsair, looks a lot nicer.

I've always been an Intel man myself not so sure about AMD stuff but I'll take a look !

I'm hoping if I get a decent CPU and mobo now it'll give me a bit of future proofing and I wont need to touch those for a while. I would plan on changing out the GPU next if anything.

Thanks !

The intel offering is solid and will last you a long time, longer than the AMD however the AMD offering is cheaper and by the time you want to swap to a newer gen you might be considering that with the intel anyway

But that allows you to overhaul everything now and worry about upgrades later (You should have members market by then allowing you to sell old hardware to recoup some cash)

the cooler is certainly better and so is the case, do you have a max budget in mind or is around the 550-600 mark your general max?

Ram chosen for compatibility, price and in stock. Speed is good too

If you're going to spend that much on a GPU in a rig that will mostly play WoW, then it's worth looking at the GTX970's which start at £251 and will run cooler and faster than a 290/290X.
