Hi people, my house mate wants to upgrade his old gf4 ti4200 to something that can play the likes of oblivion, stubbs the zombie etc (currently it doesn’t even render them). He doesn’t have a great monitor so he can’t use hi-res or have features on etc. Sadly he doesn’t have much money so is looking for something sub £100 and AGP.

I know nadda about budget cards, normally skip the articles about them and read up about the monster cards so I don’t know what to get him and don’t want to get something that will be worse than what he already has (as we all know the 4200's were great in their day).

Thanks in advance :D

XFX GeForce 6200 512MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (PVT44AYAL6) (GX-062-XF) £72

This one looks good.

But will depend on CPU, Memory & PSU of your house mates pc.

For the slight extra i would go with Sapphire ATI Radeon X700 256MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (11061-01-20) (GX-091-SP) @ Price: £66.95 (£78.67 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Better performance than a 6200.

Leadtek WinFast GeForce 6600 GT 128MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-050-LT) £79.95 (£93.94 Including VAT at 17.5%) will thrash both of those cards.

If he games at 1024x768, it will be an ideal card for him.

As much as i dont really like this card i would say its the best option so far ...

Sapphire X1600 Pro 256MB DDR2 AVIVO TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-116-SP)

Available This Week Only for just £74.95 +VAT.

The 6600gt thumps that in any game / benchmark.

I would wait a bit and see how much the 7600GS is going to be (if its agp that is)

If not the 6600gt offers best bang for buck in its price range (unless you look second hand)

Thanks for the replies, tbh I think hes a nvidia man so he would probably like the 6600. Hes also got a barton 3000+, 1gb of pc3200 and games in 1024x768 :)

The 6600gt will be perfect then.

Just had a though it is slightly above his budget but there is also the 6800GS which goes for around £130 I think.

More brute power(important for oblivion) than the 6600GT and in my eyes its worth it.

The x1600 is about as good as a paddle with holes in.
The 6200 is also a bad card.

I would look for a 9800 pro still good cards and can be had for 35-45 quid.
Or indeed a 6600 GT.

Hmm I wonder might be able to stretch to lend him the cash to go for the 6800gs as I used to love my old gt and that would last him longer untill he goes for a pci-e setup.
