Hello,

I'm going to start by explaining my requirements and reason for building a new PC.

My current pc is about four years old and was a gt8800 sli rig, quad core with 8gb ram, one of the gt8800's recently failed and has meant the pc is no longer capable of running the games I want (this also served as an excuse for a new build).

Primarily I want a gaming rig but with a high amount of memory as I may end up running several VM's while doing development work, I'd also prefer an i7 over an i5 for this reason.

I'm not overly interested in over clocking but the if MB will do it by itself I'm fine with it.

Here is my current selection of components:

Graphics Card - I'm torn between this and two 680's or three 670's, I like SLI as it also serves as a failover (one of the 8800's were replaced a couple years ago under warranty and it meant I could still use the pc). 690's look very nice and use less power.

Mother Board - I know totally totally overkill for what I need and is made for over clocking.... but it's orange... Joking aside I just want a motherboard that will do what I need and be a bit future proof. Originally I was wanting an MB with thunderbolt to use an apple display but it seem it's not possible to use discreet graphics with thunderbolt.

CPU - Not a lot to say here really best Ivy Bridge i7 I could find, had previously considered a 2011 socket with 6 cores but it didn't seem worth it.

Memory - I've only ever had Kingston and Corsair both of which have failed on me in the past and it has taken ages to diagnose memory as the issue. This time its Corsair again because it's a brand I know and have used before, I'm open to suggestions for other makes. I've added 32gb but 16gb would be enough if I'm better to spend more on better modules but less capacity. I also have concerns that putting 32gb of ram in an mb that can only hold 32gb will limit the board in some way, for example my current boards limit is 8 gb and when 8gb is installed certain features cannot be selected.

Hard Drive - I'm planning on running two 240gb SSD's in stripe for capacity and performance increases (games take a lot of space these days), again Corsair but I'm open to suggestions. I'll be using another drive for storage but this doesn't need to be listed here.

Case / PSU / CPU Cooler - Corsair again I'm afraid, truth is I don't know what make of PSU is considered decent, I like the look of the case and it's neat layout. Cooler I have read good and bad reviews. Something I'd really like is for the inside of the PC to not get dusty. Please suggest any better options for these.

Monitor - Not included in price but I'd like a good 27inch for gaming currently I have a 24 inch Asus g something (it's big and orange). I really have no idea what monitor would do a good job here. I have concers over the 27inch refresh rates.

I should also mention the games I want to play, well first of all Skyrim, Diablo 3 and Eve, I don't know what else yet, I'm planning on going overkill so I can play anything that takes my fancy on high settings.

Not sure at this point if I have missed anything but any help is greatly appreciated, I'm so out of date on all this. This PC should last approx 3 years.

Thanks,

Rick

As a comparison this is based on my new build also coming from a q6600 and 8800 based graphics, for reference in diablo 3 fully maxed with v sync @1920 1080 res the system is about 50% used

With ivy water cooling isnt really needed the weakest link is the tim between the core and the case so water cooling doesnt help all that much you might get a few degrees cooler but only with a fully custom setup and tbh mine runs at about 65c fully loaded @ 3.9ghz right out the box with no board tweaking, with this setup which is more than quick enough, if your not planning on overclocking then it really is un-needed

How about this ??

I specced the i7 3930K as you said you use a lot of VM's also I specced it incase you like to render HD video or 3D models. The GPU's I specced are massive overkill but should keep you happy until you feel the need to spend some monies again but its completely upto you.

I personally wouldn't spend this much on a PC, you could half the amount your willing to spend and still have a kick arse system that you would be very very happy with.

Thinking outside the box a bit... if you have the space for a few towers why not just build 3 systems up and use synergy to just use one keyboard and mouse and then the vm load will be spread well and you'd save some cash?

Thanks for all the replies, I'm going to look in to a cheaper build as well around the 1500 mark. Thanks everyone who responded ;)
