Im building a windows 98 pc for a mate so he can run his old games eg. the might and magic series etc. and also office 97...

I dont know what parts to use can anyone suggest some....
I reckon a intel pentium 2 will be fine mabye a P3 but thats pushing it, so does anyone have any suggestion for the rest of the components and where can I buy a intel pentium 2 or 3 I LIVE IN THE UK so no american sites...lol

cheers

No shop I know of sells P2 or P3 anymore, so you would have to look on a popular auction site.

Wh not just got a cheapo Sempron or Celeron and install 98's on it, hardware compatbilitiy shouldnt be an issue with the processor and just find an old GFX AGP/PCI card on an auction, something like Geforce2 GTS or Geforce 4 series would be just fine and probably cheaper than going specifically for P3 or P2

Might and magic series works on XP...

And we can't tell you any shops that might sell old stuff, against the rules. Not even link to auction sites which would be your best bet.

Give us a budget and I'll see what sort of thing I can find. Will it need KB/Mouse & screen?

400? lol you can get a p4 easely for that
a p2 shoudl be no more as 50 quid
here in the nl we have 1 popular ad site ( cant tell link i think) with tons and tons of adverts includign a lot of old mobo's cpus, an old p3 mobo is for 10 € and a p3 800 mhz for 5 €, etc...

For 400 quid you can build a p4 or athlon 64 with no probs.]

Heres a p4 spec (video onboard, just use win98 Se so it detects it as a p4, and you can play any dos game w/o any probs)

I suppose dual boot is a possibility, but most games will work on XP in 95 compatibility mode.

Dont know if windows 98SE supports athlons 64....

Like I said the games will work on XP

Soem games dont, a lot of dos games are having trouble with winxp even if you have a fat32 drive, for example my destruction derby 2 even with comp. modes just doesnt work ok ( graphics problems ) on winxp, true you can sue a program liek dosbox, but perhaps he wants a pc that can support any game w/o any extra apps?

While win98 still runs all dos games without any problem.

hmm ok, then I support raikiri's spec, sicne it appears 98 works ok with a64's (just never had win98 anymore on athlon 64, and renembered had trouble with p4 at 1st too, so was unsure about a64 support....), better to go amd above p4.
