I was just wondering if its possible to build a mac yourself? I have experience building pc's just wondered if the same can be done for a mac? If someone can point me in the right direction thanks.

Read the sticky at the top. WE aren't allowed to talk about it but it'll get you started on it

You could build a Mac if you had access to place orders for all the parts that make up a Mac, bit of an expensive way of doing it though :p.

Buy one.

You cannot legally install OS X on non-Apple hardware, as per the EULA.

It's not that hard to get an OSX86 PC going running OSX. You just need to select the hardware real careful and follow the published guides. The sticky regarding OSX on PC's says that can say it exists and that we have done it, however we cannot post how we did it or where you can find information on getting it running.

I built one, but just to see what it is like. As I like it then am going to get a genuine MacBook Pro, and I would recommend that you get a genuine Mac as much better if using regularly.

Genuine Macs are a lot more expensive than the parts they're made from though. I could see why someone wanted to do it.

You're right - but would you want to build your own ferrari? and I dont mean the mr2 bodykit! :D which forum am I in!?

Seriously though its illegal, as EVH said above... and in my opinion isnt worth doin... if I have to pay a fortune to use mac os - so does the OP!

Here endeth the sixth lesson

Tom :)

Has there been a test case by apple against someone installing OSX on their pc?

Its against the EULA but nothings come about it.

To the OP - try a linux distro, you can get them looking similar to macs with a similar UNIX base and GUI. They are free as well.

I dare say Gnome + Compiz fusion is the best GUI i've used bar none. Its not that slick as OS X but more functional imho.

Not to my knowledge

Point made..

True..

I have to admit i've never heard of compiz fusion so you got me there..

My post, however was to be taken a little tongue in cheek..

Anyway - you're right - it is possible to do an os86 jobby/hackintosh- but it wont be as pweety as a macpro or even a mini...and its for a different forum..

hmm

Ah, who cares if it's illegal. Just don't broadcast it.

Downloading free music is illegal for Christ's Sakes.

And what do people think happens to cracked copies of various £800 Final Cut Editing Programs? People download them obviously.

Yeah but this isn't like installing a dogi copy of windows on yer pc.

its a massive faff to get drivers to work (requires terminal window to edit files and device ID hacking)

After all that, it still wont be as good in any case.

Unless you know your stuff and your willing to work on it for about 2 days straight to make it 100%, I wouldn't worry about it.

For my first OSX86 experience I can remember working from 11am to 4am, and it was just about working. I must have re-installed about 20+ times and then futered about with the drivers. Install one wrong driver and restart and it may boke it up.

I had OSX86, then I got a Macbook because of the sheer greatness of Mac, but I had to sell it because I figured that it was cheaper to just build an awesome PC (for the same Price as the Macbook) and have a spec nearly as good as a Mac Pro. I didn't have much money at the time.

I have pretty much everything working 100% now, but I haven't installed any drivers for a long time. Updates normally are fine.

Forum rules won't allow me to tell you how to do it, but there is LOTS of information out there to help you if your willing.

I would run with the above comments though if you have the money. I'd love a Mac Pro, just cannot afford it right now.
