I still have no idea if there will be further announcements from Intel /AMD regarding new CPUs (excluding Rocket Lake). So, should I bite the bullet and upgrade in the next few months, or wait for improved versions of Intel /AMD CPUs?

I'll likely wait for the Ryzen 5000 series prices to drop a bit first, if I upgrade to a 5600X /5800X CPU. I'll want high speed DDR4 RAM too, so the motherboard chipset will matter.

Is there any reason not to choose the MSI A520M-A PRO? Apart from only supporting PCIE3? What's the turbo / OC support like?

All A520 chipset motherboards have decent RAM support it seems.

The B550M S2H could be another good option, as it has DDR4 4266(O.C.) support.

I think AMD will have a cheaper 6 core CPU soon, but I'm unsure about other announcements.

Regardless of what they release, it'll very likely be out of stock for a long time, so the only hope is that the "previous gen" becomes available to buy!
 
That MSI 520M is a budget MOBO and if the chipset matters then that inst the board for you.

THis spreadsheet is useful for comparing various MOBO's. 3600Mhz RAM is the sweetspot for RAM speed. Depending on the quality of the IF in the CPU will determine if you can go higher at 1:1 with RAM. If you are a gamer and want to save some money then the 5600X is a great chip where the 5800X will offer longevity.

I'd deffo go for a 550 board over a 520, but really if chipset matters then it's an X570 board and decent ones start around the £230 mark.

As you have +1000 posts I'd keep an eye out in the members market - some decent stuff to be had in there.
 
My advice, if you have the itch to build something, do it and get any gpu to tie you over until stocks arrive and prices drop. If you have the patience to wait, then wait.... If you built something today then it'll be out of date by tomorrow anyway. Do what makes you happy!
 
If you've got the budget for a 5800X then I'd say A520 chipset is a bit of an odd choice.
As for the overall high level question I would hold fire personally as 5000 series have high prices, well over £300 for an Octa core. Don't think it's really worth it, considering the 2700x cost under £150 over a year ago and it's only about 30% faster than that.
 
Thanks for the advice. I'm inclined to get a 5800X + cheap B550 motherboard + DDR 4000mhz RAM, as I think this hardware will handle any games + most demanding software for several years. I've looked at various AMD / Intel CPU official and leaked roadmaps, and I don't believe they are releasing anything significant until 2022.

I have a Hyper 212 EVO cooler (8 years old!) that would probably work with the 5800X, apparently I can reduce the TDP to 65w if needed.

Or, I could get a 10900 / 10850K (10 cores) instead, what do you think guys? They are better priced than the 5800x atm, and might reduce further soon.

10850K, same CPU but cheaper, £380 vs £420 for the 5800X

Its a good alternative but you have to take into account the motherboard.

Aorus Elite Z490 £190

Aorus Elite V2 B550 £140

That B550 doesn't come with Wifi but they do that one with wifi, mine, Aorus Elite V2 AX which unlike the Z490 is Intel Wifi 6, and its only about £20 more, so you are paying a bit more for equivalent Motherboards

If you want Wifi the 10850K setup comes to £570, the 5800X setup comes to £560 without Wifi or about £580 with. But the Z490 also doesn't have PCIe 4.

Personally i would, i did go for the 5800X, less cores but the per core performance is much higher.
 
I've just gone all in and bought 'half' of a new PC, based on a 5800x. First new PC for about 20 years, and will pass my 4770k down to my son.

New matx case, matx 550-Plus wifi6 board, 2x16gb 3600 ram, 750w modular psu, 240mm aio and a 5800x.

4000> ram seems massively overpriced - so stuck with 3600. Should be more than enough to run KSP.
 
Well, the 11700KF might be good choice for around £310-£320. Or, the 11700F for around £250-£260. The Cinebench single + multithreaded R20 benchmarks seem close to the Ryzen 5800X and 5600x. Presumably, the 11700 (4.4ghz all cores) will have around 11-12% lower multithreaded performance, vs a 11700K clocked at 5.0ghz.

Unfortunately, the retail prices are higher than I expected (more than official Intel prices), by around £50-£60. Doesn't look like Intel is going to pressure the Ryzen 5000 series on pricing.

My impression is, Intel doesn't want to change their Comet Lake series pricing, so priced Rocket Lake high... It's a strange move, considering they both use the same LGA 1200 platform.

Intel fans will always refuse AMD, always makes stuff up to justify even a worse performing product.
