Build advice please

Hi All,

I would like some build advice please. I built my last PC in 2003 and it's still running (I'm writing this from it now), however, I feel it's on its last legs so I'm looking to get a new one before it packs in. It is getting close to the industry-standard 10-year mean time between failure (MTBF) point!

I currently have an AMD3200+, with an Asus k8v deluxe and a 7600GT on AGP (upgraded from an original 9800pro). Quite a lot has changed since 2003 in PC technology and it seems to me as if there is more choice now than then.

I’m looking to be able to run my old games CS 1.6 and quake 3 (lol) and possibly some new ones too; possibly CS:GO, MW3. I’m also looking for a reasonably quiet PC because I’ll use it for work/media as well. A key requirement is the longevity of the system and upgrade potential as this worked for me in the past to extend system life.

I’d generally like to stick with nVidia as I believe they have better opengl performance in the old games that I play; and with Asus as the reliability of my old system has been remarkable. I’m also not really looking to overclock (for long life) – so superior cooling performance not required - and also in Scotland it’s always cold! I’m going to re-use my old CRT (iiyama Vision Master Pro 413) monitor as well.

I’ve done some research and the following is what I’ve come up with. Comments are very much appreciated, thanks.

Hi RJC, thanks for the fast reply and suggestions. I'll look into them. One question:

So you're not able to qualify as an OEM any more if you're building your own machine?

Sorry, should have mentioned, with the retail cpu you get 3 year warranty, fancy box & cooler, OEM you get one year and a small plain box.

The retail Bluray you get the software as well.
