Have been trying to get a build together and these forums have helped a lot. I have a list of bits and bobs I like. Hoping for a sanity check and maybe some pointers. Thanks in advance.

What's your ideal budget?

Is it mainly for gaming? And if so, for what resolution and settings (including fps target, if you have one)?

Ideal budget is £2000-2200 top end. It is mainly for gaming. I dont have a fps in mind my current machine is over 10 years old anything above etcha-sketch is a bonus. I need to upgrade my monitor but I wanted to do that a few months down the line.

This may sound ridiculous but until you asked I hadn't really thought about it. 1440p would be my answer. But now im wondering if I have gone about this completely the wrong way. I was looking to get as much out of my budget to last as long as I could with out any serious upgrades.

I Appreciate the alternate option.

Paying over £1000 for a graphics cards gives me the horrors. Its the constant battle of vanity and practicality. In fairness practicality looses more often than not.

Well, I always start with the intended resolution and the fps target, because that defines everything about what is acceptable.

Getting the build to last is something I'd consider, but value for money or $$/FPS ratio is usually worse for hardware, the higher up you go, which makes future proofing a very nuanced topic. I mainly try to judge by what's likely to be an issue in the next 3-5 years (e.g. what we've seen in the latest games like Hogwarts has dramatically changed how VRAM is being perceived right now).

I think @tamzzy said this in another thread, you're right, but the fact is, getting the best performance for your budget usually means buying the highest performing graphics card you can squeeze into it. If your budget is over 2K and you buy a 4070, your gaming experience is not going to be comparable to a £1000 7900 XTX. I'm all for saying: "I'll only buy midrange because these prices are crazy", but if that's the case, don't spend £2K and you may upgrade more often (or just have different expectations, like 1440p/60 fps rather than 1440p/120 fps).

yeah close enough :P
"I wouldn't bother looking at the individual prices. Rather suggest you look at what you're getting for the full system cost"

see above

sub £2k build with a 7900XTX:

beefy gpu (340mm length) will fit the case with the aio mounted up top, or get the lian-li 205M as per tetras' spec above if you want a more conventional looking case
(all items available in stock as of the post)

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,982.92 (includes delivery: £0.00)

because i'm bored... £2200 build (7800x3d + 7900xtx)
if you're going to spend £2.2k then this is where it's at. including a 2tb ssd, so better than your original spec overall
mobo oos at ocuk but readily available elsewhere (and possibly cheaper too :) )

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £2,194.92 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Thanks very much for the replies. Got a bit more to think about than I imagined. Digesting the top end GFX card and absolutely get where you are both coming from and probably need to reset my thinking. Didn't really think I could have both the top end card and chip so that's quite a surprise.

Also thanks @freddie64 I totally missed that.

Will have a think and may try a mix and match between the suggestions made and see how I end up.

Looks fine. Though I would have personally gone for the riptide for the motherboard. It's oos at ocuk but available elsewhere.

I needed in stock parts as I was going to get OCuk to build it for me. I will ask about the lead time on the riptide and if its not too bad may switch to it. Got to say quite excited.
