Hi need some advice, rethinking which cpu to buy for my first build, i intended to buy amd 9800x3d but wondering if there is a better option, need the cpu for general windows use and multitasking but also want excellent gaming results, if i had the money i would go for the 9950x3d but its currently about £200 more than the 9800x3d so too much. i like the gaming benchmarks on the 9800x3d but wonder if getting more cores would help me in windows and if i could save some money somewhere without losing much gaming performance.

64gb ram
1/2 tb m.2 drive
850w/1000w psu
9070 xt

More cores will help if you do multi threaded workloads/rendering ,etc but for gaming the 9800x3d is the one to choose .

What do you mean by multitasking exactly?

If you just mean leaving some apps open, the 9800X3D is more than capable.

The 9950X3D is only worth it for heavy CPU load.

hi thanks for the replies, 70% of the time i will be in windows with multiple browsers open and multiple tabs within each browsers and be moving files in the background and watching videos etc, when i do play games i want to be able to play them at their best and not worry about low fps. just wondered if the 9800x3d was my best option, been sorting out my pc build now for a number of months and the 9800x3d was always my 1st choice but maybe there is a better option?.

That's nothing the 9800X3D can't handle, you still have 8 fast cores.

The Zen 6 X3D is believed to have 12 cores per CCD, if so, that would be even better, but the 9800X3D should be more than enough for that kind of usage.

The 265K is a good price for a mixed usage/productivity CPU, but you'd lose a chunk of gaming performance, so not worth it unless your alternative usage is very heavy.

9700x is a great all rounder but the 9800x3d is a better gaming chip but what most videos don't show is the 1%and the .1% lows which is the fps in most demanding parts of the game this is also where the x3d shines.

Price difference is about £130 if you think thats worth spending elsewhere in your build or saving then so be it but you always pay a premium for the best.

what kind of workload are you using?

9800x3d and 9950x3d are practically the same for gaming, and even for regular workloads 8 cores is probably enough. If you are doing some heavy CPU stuff then go for the 16 cores. If its specific apps then check online to see the performance difference with CPU

This can give you an idea, but it is highly variable on the game/settings.

If you play the kind of games that like the X3D's cache, the 7800X3D would be a better choice than the 9700X.
