Build concerns - anyone live in Willesden?!

So I've just attempted to build my first PC from scratch. It's harder than I thought considering I've tinkered about with them for a while, but not in detail. Does anyone live in Willesden, London?

I will pay if needs be.

The mobo is an ASUS H81M-Plus

There are lots of cables from the power supply (super flower bronze) that don't seem to go anywhere:

- 4 red ones (two of which say PCI express and are 6 pin) that I can't seem to connect to the GPU (MSI Radeon R7 250), though maybe I don't have to.

- One blue connector (8 pin) that says CPU 1 on it, but that doesn't seem to go anywhere either.

To add to this, I have a DVD drive from my old PC which is IDE only! The Mboard has no IDE capacity (it's Micro ATX) so I think I may have to try installing windows using a bootable USB.

I will try and get some pictures, though it's a faff.

Any help?

Hi,

Im here to help you..

So, PSU cables.

1) Red ones - These are GPU power cables. Your GPU doesn't need an PSU power (as the power from the PCI-E lane is enough for it to run on). So these are nothing to worry about.

2) Blue connector - I assume you have a 4 pin CPU plugged into your motherboard already? This should be on the top left of the motherboard. If so, this 8-pin cable is spare. If not this 8-pin connector should split into 2 halfs (4-pins).. Attach one into that slot and leave the other to dangle freely.

The reason some need 8-pins is for extra power for Overclocking features, this is why most PSU's come with 8 pin EPS (that's their technical name). :)

3) DVD drive. You'll need a new one, IDE is no longer supported, you can pick a standard SATA one up for £15, or like you say boot from USB. :)

Does this help?

Have you got any more queries i can help with? :)

No worries.

If you can get it on to the USB drive in the first place, yes. :)

Then you just ensure you set boot option (in the BIOS) as USB. :)

So I sort it all out, plug it in and...

NOTHING. The PC doesn't turn on.

I have initially used the two pin plug sent with the PSU, and it didn't work, so I try the one from my old desktop and nothing. Not a single jot of power.

I give up.

Sorted it...I think

Left out the last four of the 24 pin connnector and connected the 4 from the blue connector. Now I just need to get the monitor working!

What a palava.

Is the fan on the cpu cooler plugged into the fan header on the motherboard next to the ram slots, up and right of the cpu if looking straight down at it?

I've sorted it all out now and installed Windows 8.1.

The only problems I'm dealing with now are:

1) A really really noisy CPU fan (i3-4130 with stock fan) which is only spinning at 1050rpm and is set to silent! I've checked to see if there's a wire catching or something but don't want to take the fan off because I have no thermal paste atm.

2) Two light areas at the bottom of the monitor (Hazro 27" from OC)

I'm not sure about the fan, it shouldn't be noisy at that speed whatsoever.

For the monitor, OCUK has been having some issues with a batch of Hazro monitors, its worth putting a post in customer services and seeing what they say, you should be able to get a warranty replacement.

Good job :)

Sounds like you have got it sorted now, but for future reference, I live near Willesden and have been know to tinker with pc's, so if you get stuck on anything else, send me a message in Trust and I will see what I can do. :)
