It's been a little while since I embarked on a PC build. My last 'ground-up' build for myself was in a Cooler Master ATCS-201! My current machine (custom prebuilt for me) is an ageing MSI Nightblade Z87 based (16 litre case), sporting an i5-4690K and GTX1050Ti.

The case is non-negotiable, although only marginally smaller than my current PC, I feel it gives a great balance of size/performance for future upgrades. I do intend to reuse the case for future builds.

My primary usage is software development, with occasional light gaming @ 1440p (think Doom 2016 / XCom2 - not Cyberpunk). I have some spare 2.5" SATA SSDs, and will probably donate 1 to this build, additionally I will probably add a high capacity mechanical 2.5" unit for database storage etc.

I'm particularly interested in optimising the air-cooling for the case and would be interested in the options available to me. I should note, I'm not interested in any water-cooling.

The GPU is indicative, and in reality will be something around this level, but will be the 'best bargain' available at the time of purchase. I've got the case on pre-order, and the rest will wait until this is in my hands.

This will be the first PC ever for me with an NVME drive, I'd like to know any 'must knows' or pitfalls here.

Dan Case C4-SFX
i5-13400
Noctua NH-D12L
MSI MPG B760I Edge WIFI DDR4
Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 32GB (2x16GB) 3600 MHz
Samsung 980 Pro 1TB M.2 2280 PCI-e 4.0 x4 NVMe Solid State Drive
Seasonic Focus SGX 650W 80 Plus Gold Modular SFX Power Supply
Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3060 Eagle LHR 12GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card

You can get a 2tb sn770 for the same price as the 980 pro or 1tb for £50 which has great performance, there are cheaper psu bit Overclockers don't have much stock .

£90 for the nocthua cooler is excessive.

£70 water cooler

Seems to be a good shout. On paper the Samsung 'should' be better, but it would seem in many use cases the WD Black comes out on top!

It is eye wateringly expensive, however I am committed to air-cooling. Would be interested in any air-cooling alternates.

This cooler 160w tdp with mounting kit is a 3rd of the price of the nocthua.
