Hey folks gonna build my father a new desktop for his birthday since his laptop is crap putting it politely. he's not really a gamer although he will play certain games mainly older titles, RCT3 for example he might try WOT etc but not the cutting edge stuff, it mainly gonna be web surfing and youtube etc with media as he has a large backlog of photos etc. Was thinking AMD APU was the way to go as it offers the best bang for buck in my opinion. Would you guys say this is the right path or would you go intel+dedicated at more expense.

This is the spec I thought I would go for.

AMD A10 5800K
MSI A85XA-G65
Seagate 2TB HDD or WD depends which is the better price at time of purchase
Corsair CX500.
Bitfenix Shinobi (as its great value)
bog standard DVD drive
4GB corsair dominator from one of my old builds
OS will be Win 8

Any body have anything they'd change I have about 400 to 450 to spend.

Looks great mate only thing I would change is the PSU to an XFX 450w but they tend to be out of stock most of the time lol

Those A10's like Fast RAM. If you only have 1600Mhz, id suggest getting a set of 2133. It will imrpove the graphics no end..

If he has RAM then I would use it. Buying a 8GB kit above 1600mhz is going to be £40-50. I'd sooner spend that on a 2nd hand GPU like a 1GB 460 or AMDs 6850.....the faster RAM won't make the IGP better than these dedicated GPUs.

Case is a personal preference. I like the Zalman Z9 U3 as it's great value with so much kit in it. The Shinobi is nice but I think I'd get the windowed version as it includes an extra fan. The standard Shinobi only has one, the "core" cases have no fans, grills or badges....just an FYI

Over budget but a much better all round gaming rig. No OS but he can try the evaluation edition of windows 8 for free. After 3 months he can decide wether to buy 8 or get 7. I'd rather do that than end up dropping in a dedicated GPU later in all honesty.
