Hi, what do you think for this as a build for the girlfriend?

It needs to be cheap but run games such as portal 2 so any tweaking to get it cheaper is much appreciated :)

Thanks, Ross

I like, but how about THESE ram instead, they're cheaper!, and I think the psu could be made slightly cheaper with THIS?

Rest looks fine tho :)

*edit after being just beaten :p - the 540 would be a better choice to save a few quid too :)

How about this

You don't really need the 540 as you're paying for graphics on the CPU when you wont be using it. The AMD is better for gaming. I have also included a better card which should help with the gaming aswell.

This spec is £10 more than the original spec price, but includes a quad core CPU and a 21.5in 1920x1080 (1080p) monitor.

Stulid's option of a Sandy bridge i3 is also a good one - a very fast CPU for the money, no point going for clarkdale/s1156 these days. You would also have the option of upgrading to a quad core sandy bridge or ivy bridge CPU in the future.

Cheers :) The i3 was so a i5 could be put in at a later date if more performance was needed. I think the 5830 is good enough for her needs (I have one and it runs everything I play great).

The full HD monitor is certainly an advantage!

If you get the socket 1155 spec I did, you can put even the mighty i5 2500 in it:)

I opted for the 540 a few months back for my girlfriend also. Told me she would be doing photoshop, video editing... the odd game. All she's done is go on Youtube and use paint. These systems really are wasted on them lol.

Stick with the Intel then if you plan on upgrading. Be handy for you to play around with when you're over :D

Looks like a really good spec :) That i3 2100 is one heck of a cpu for the money.

Are you needing an operating system?

I know this pushes the budget up a bit, but have you considered adding a small SSD like this for £46. Its only big enough to install windows and the key applications (put the games on the machanical hard drive) - but with just the OS and apps on the SSD things will feel so much faster in general use due to the removal of the performance bottleneck that is caused by a mechanical primary HDD.
