Hello all

total newbie here - experienced computer user, but Mac only.

I’m keen to have a play around with VR, and the new Quest 2 looks like a great bit of kit. However, I’d like to play more hardware-intensive games which require a PC link (like Half Life Alyx and the upcoming Medal of Honor game). So I’m after a set of components I can put together myself at a low budget (say £500) that will allow a bit of experimentation. Coming from the walled-garden of OSX, I’m baffled by the variety of options available! All assurance much appreciated.

Think you may struggle to build a VR PC for £500. Unless you can grab a load of second hand components.

Something like a Ryzen 3600, motherboard, ram, case, psu, disk drives is already going to get close to £500, then add a GPU capable enough for VR will probably be £200-£300.

alternative is to try and get a laptop with a full fat GTX 1060 or 1070 2nd hand.

You are probably best heading over to the VR forum as there will be people in there who have the Quest 2 and have tried PC link or Virtual Desktop with the Quest2.

Just to give you an example when I had the Quest 1 I had it connected to my son's PC as a test who had i5 8500, 16gb RAM and GTX 1060 and it was an ok experience. Not good but playable. Although that was via Virtual Desktop not the link.
