Build for storage / ripping blu rays / media server

switch your motherboard out for this one

I don't see the need to spend much more when you are not going to use the features your are paying exra for and as you are not using a gfx card you don't have to worry about getting a sli/xfire supported board etc.

Are you burining files to your SSD then transfering them or are you burning them straight to HDD, either way 120/128gb SSD should be enough for OS some programs and a few a few ripped blue rays etc so you can save a bit more there.

You havn't listed a cooler in that last spec, but based on your choosing on the h100i in your first spec theres plenty to to be saved there by using an air cooler at half the price.

I think the faster ram is a good choice and the CPU, case is personal preference but not sure it supports the h100, only seems to have 1 fan slot on the top unless i have got that wrong.

PSU, is 650 watts needed for just a cpu with overlock and a few hdd's (lets say 5 or 6 once you buy more). You can probably save more money here too by getting a 500watt psu.

Excellent. That's the sort of cost saving advice I was looking for. What features am I loosing with the MB downgrade then? Nothing important I guess so long as I can retain my HDMI output and HD audio.

I did consider the smaller SSD. As I had originally included the smaller one in the initial build. But just 5 mins ago I came to the same conclusion as you. Get the smaller one for OS and a few progs, and then maybe put the savings to another bigger HDD. I doubt I would be able to transcode or rip the movie faster than the write speed of a regular HDD.

Yes, I binned the cooler in the later spec as I had introduced other, probably unwarranted bits. I am unsure if I will OC the system, due to the always on nature of the build, but maybe a small OC wouldn't hurt. Either way, what would be a suitable, quiet solution for this? Any recommendations?

As for the case, I was happy enough with the original one I listed. But really I am looking for a cool and quiet case, with multiple USB 3.0 external inputs (I have multiple USB 3.0 external HDD's for when I'm travelling with work, so fast DF's are nice). Any recommendations here? Or is the one I picked in the second build good enough?

500 watt PSU be okay then? I was going to go overkill and get the bigger one than the one I chose there, just for the 10 year warranty (it was the PSU was the killer in my last system). Again, any advice on where to go here?

Away to modify that basket now then...

Not sure you would need a full tower case.

I don't think that Ram will fit under that cooler. You would be better with low profile as in my spec.

The reason I chose the full tower is mostly for HDD space. I am unsure if 4 HDD's will be enough going forward. I mean, I currently have 3, so only having room for 4 will limit my future storage expansion capabilities (although I will inevitably have to start replacing my 2 TB drives with 4 TB drives eventually).

I like the CPU cooler though. That'll save some £££'s off too. Will drop the HDD just now too. I think, IIRC, I currently have around 2 TB of free space left ATM. And HDD prices will always get cheaper (barring another typhoon / flood or something). So can just add that when required.

I'm sure that PSU is great, but I REALLY want a modular PSU so that I can keep the inside as neat and tidy as possible.

Good shout on the BR though.

Is there any advantage to be had for going for the slower RAM? Other than saving £6?

Now looking like this :

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £239.99
1 x NZXT Phantom 530 Full Tower Gaming Case - Black £104.99

1 x Deepcool GAMMAXX 300 CPU-Cooler - 120mm £16.99
Total : £753.92 (includes shipping : £12.50).

Woo Hoo. Another £2 off. Would be nice to get it under £700 though. But I guess that'll be too tight...

Ok. So while I appreciate your advice lee32uk, upon further consideration, there are some things I would like to keep. One would be the Gold rated PSU, and second would be water cooling. However, I can go smaller on the WC.

So, what is likely looking closer to a final build is this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £239.99
1 x NZXT Phantom 530 Full Tower Gaming Case - Black £104.99
1 x EVGA SuperNova NEX 650W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £95.99
1 x Pioneer BDR-208EBK 15x BluRay RW / 16x DVD±RW 128GB - Retail £85.99
1 x Gigabyte Z87-HD3 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £82.99
