OK, so I'm new here and a little premature in my questions but, I will be building a new rig in the summer, probably July time. The exact timing is dependent upon a couple of things but primarily, I want to see what direction, timescale and pricing the new Robson tech will take.

Anyways, will be looking at building a quad core with most likely a R600 (again, this depends on whether the NV 8900 or 8950 are out or likely to be soon at that point).

My question is pretty basic actually regardless of the above ramblings. Whn building your PC is it normal to throw everything together before the big switch on or is it recommended to put it together in stages? i.e. add in PCI cards one at a time to make it easier to identify any potential problems?

I mean, your going to have to put the basics on to start with, CPU, ram, hd, GPU on but... hey, you know what I mean anyway :)

Excuse me going on, work gets boring sometimes.

Vorm.

Havnig built many of my own machines i also get the basics (inc gfx) in first and get the OS installed, Service packed (if necessary) and all drivers installed so that its purring happily :)

Then install the other stuff one by one.

Personal preference really but its easier to do it stage by stage so that if any problem do occur, you can usually narrow it down quicker doing it in stages.

Thanks Voo.

I also live in Hull. Don't suppose you use the local newsgroups do you?

Most stuff is on the mobo these days, you may find that you don't need any PCI cards.

I can only think of a couple myself, that being sound card and wireless lan if needed. I'm sure there's more. Maybe a USB2 card!

Ahhh, sounds like I'm not going to have any problems then!

Shouldn't speak so soon :)

yeah thats right. i mean, i've got 7.1, wifi, 8x usb2, 6x sata ports, 2x gigabit lan ports, 2x firewire.....all on board. Thinking about it, i dont actually use any pci cards lol

yeah I thought the same thing with only 2 PCI on my DS4 but as my sound cards not supported in Vista it was a waste of time even having one :p

:) it's so obviously such a long time since I put one together I didn't appreciate how much comes onboard nowadays.

How does the onboard sound compare to a separate card?

It has optical out, it's High Definition now, with surround channels etc... pretty good if you ask me.
