Hi I'm not greatly into computers and have read the 'Ultimate Guide - What to buy, and how to build!' thread but still having trouble getting the correct components together. A friend of mine would like a new computer I have £500 to build it, so if someone's bored could they knock me a price list up of components.

The computer would need everything, keyboard/mouse/dvd writer/case etcetc

My friend would like a 17" monitor and imo atleast a gig of ram.

Thanks for any replies :)

Fine for usual net stuff, light gaming Asking too much if he wants proper gaming rig with monitor (usually the most expensive component) as well.

Difficult budget but this is close and a decent spec, pretty good gaming capability. Went for a CRT as in this budget you have to compromise somewhere.

Thats without the monitor but the total include VAT.....So it gives you 120 to look for a 17inch tft :)

Forgetting about playing games and overclocking....

If in the future he wants to plays latest games etc he would need to get a gfx card however if he wants to overclock then he would have to change his mobo.....

This pc will serve him well as long as he doesnt want to overclock or game but if he suddenlys decides he wants to then he would need to upgrade....

The computer will be used for internet browsing/media usage/3d graphics software. Thanks for all the swift replies I'll take a look when I get home from work :)

Thanks again

3D graphics to me = Rendering and possible animation. Whilst I've only specced a 3000 Venice you'll be able to overclock that CPU/Mobo combination quite nicely to help with rendering and the X800 will do nicely for any animating.

My friend wants a tft no matter what which would put you a lot over budget

I'd probably opt for BigDom's specification although you could get the Gigabyte K8NMF-9 nForce4 Micro ATX to knock around £25 off the budget and possibly get the X800GTO 256mb from the clearance section if it comes back into stock to save another £10 or so. Other than that I can't see too many ways to save money without compromising on performance.

From this we can cut the price down a little but is there something else that can be downgraded a little to make it closer to the £500 budget?

Have you also missed out a gfx card? Would this spec computer be good enough for some 3d software?

Thanks,

This is similar to the specs above but with a 17" TFT and £500. Not sure how good the psu is though, someone would have to confirm that it is good enough to run this spec.

VERY week PSU ( 300W ) wouldn't trust it at all myself.

I know my spec only has a 350W but the Antec's are very reputable and solid, plus I've got experience of them.

TFT = 1/3 his budget... no way will he get decent 3D/Rendering performance for £350ish...

either raise the budget to £600 or accept a CRT.

I'll see what I can do, I'll ask my friend whether he is willing to up it to £600, although i doub it :(

Lee87 that looks pretty good can anyone verify its quality?

Thanks again guys :)

Just looked around and the 300W psu in the asus barebones is very good quality.
People in this thread are using it to run X2 3800+ and other high quality parts so I would say it would be fine with this spec.

Fair enough, I'd still go my spec for a couple of reasons.

1) Definatly little or no overhead for upgrades.
2) Apparantly small PSU - tight to fit full ATX PSU in.
3) Not sure of it's overclockability and whilst you didn't state overclocking on that budget it's worth doing a little.

I've spoken to my friend and tft is a must and the budget remains at 500. So i think i'm going to go for the above. If anyone can see any major problems with the above let me know :)

Thanks for everyones time and effort,
