There's some core components, don't really know if you want OS included, etc. though....

its for my brother who yes is wanting a pc for gaming. hes come to me to spec him one but i feel its better off in the hands of some people who know a little bit more about the current gear.

(£171.54) £145.99

EVGA nForce 790i Ultra SLi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
(£249.09) £211.99

OCZ 4GB DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz Platinum (2x2GB) Dual Channel DDR3 (OCZ3P13334GK)

(£35.24) £29.99

thats what i was looking at. what do you guys think?

Why do you want a quad for gaming? Stick an E8400 or an E8200!

I don't know about the 790i/DDR3 combo, it's a huge amount to spend compared to the rest of the rig, but I hear the 790 boards are a lot better than the 780 ones.

Don't bother with that 9800GX2 to be honest. Too much money for what you get and to then Quad SLi will cost an absolute fortune. Plus, the 9800GX2 is of course already SLi, so an Intel chipset would be a better pairing for that card in my opinion.

8800GTX is all you need graphics wise, it'll play everything maxed, what do you need a GX2 for? Also dodge DDR3.. DDR2 @ 4GB+ is all you need for performance and overclockabilty.

the quad and the 790sli/ddr3 is for a bit of future proofing(if such a thing is possible in gaming hardware lol).

The only problems i see are the graphics card situation. its a right mess but the gx2 is the clear top performer from benches. he wont be quad sli-ing 2 gx2s but when the next series of cards comes out he could get 2 of them atleast then if he wanted thats the idea behind getting an sli board. and yes ive heard the 790i are meant to be pretty good.

1200 is the figure i was given. he wants a top machine.

That's a good spec in terms of components but not in terms of price.

If your mate really wants to spend £1200, then go with the above components, but seriously, 9800GX2's are a waste of money, soon to be End Of Line and the much cheaper 8800GTX is far superior because it doesn't rely on SLi, is much cheaper and your friend would probably get better and more Consistent framerates out of it than the 9800GX2. However, 790i and DDR3 is a superb combination, irregardless of price.
