Hey all,

Currently at a loss at what to do with regards to getting a new gaming computer, as to be honest I've never done this before.

My Budget will be around £1,000, can go higher if needs be but just by playing around with the online PC creators I know prices can spiral rapidly so closer to that figure the better. The computer itself would be just for gaming, ideally I want it for the release of Rome total war 2 but I will probably play a bit of Eve online on it as well.

So essentially im wondering if I am better off making my own or buying a pre-built. For my lower-end budget will I save much money in making it myself? I have a mate or two that will build it for me for a crate of beers so im not too worried about that side of it if it would be worth doing.

Final thing being I will be looking at using it on a unique screen, one of these:

Would that be okay to do? As its 3d capable would I be able to get components that could accommodate that for my budget? Cheers in advance!

Building it yourself is a doddle. Especially if you have an internet connected device to look things up on or come here for advice / guidance.

You'll get a decent machine for that budget if you do too. Mine came in at less than that with some careful purchases on the daily deals and things like that and runs most stuff at max settings or close to.

I'm sure someone who knows more than I do will spec you something soon.

I'll try and keep this brief....

Yes build it yourself, better choice of components and you can inject some of your own style into the look of the rig.....it's a custom build after all.

Intel has a new socket being released next month called Haswell (1150) and Nvidia should be releasing some updated GPUs by the end of the month we hope. So spend a little time watching videos on how to do a build and maybe settle on a case you really like the look of.

I have a samsung 3DTV I use with my HTPC. Ideally you want an Nvidia GPU. There is a stupid restriction with HDMI 1.4 (for 3D) which locks the FPS to the refresh rate of 24Hz @1080p (24 FPS is no where near good enough for gaming). Set the resolution to 720P and you can get much better FPS @60Hz. You also need to buy some software from Nvidia to use the 3DTV for 3D gaming but they do a demo trial so you can see if it's worth your time.

I look forward to seeing what you settle on getting in the end :)

Build your own every day of the week (including sunday).
but at that price point, yeah, wait for haswell, otherwise youll be depressed if it is way better than what you have for the same money.

Building your own PC just FEELS so much better.
The moment you press the power button after you have just put everything together and wired everything up.....awesome

Definitley build it yourself, some one on here will spec you a great system for that budget, they did with me :) and I had it together in less than 2 hours and I had NEVER done anything like that before, just look up some 'how to' videos on youtube, some good stuff on there :)

Cheers for the reply!

Ill probably put this in the backburner then if new kits coming out over the next few months, quite handy either way as I won't have the funds for a month or two. Read a quick review and this Haswell gear knocks up improvement on gaming a fair bit so I'll look forward to seeing whats to offer when it releases.
