Build on a budget

I need a little advice on an own-build. Basically, I don't have a lot of money, and I'm looking for advice on a spec that's low-end but sturdy, reliable and most importantly, upgradable. The upper limit is £500, and that would need to include a monitor, though not an OS. I'd be using it for browsing, work and light gaming.

In general, which brands are known for reliability? Which ones should be avoided?

Is my budget too strict, if I want anything approaching quality?

That thread is a goldmine for what you are asking.

Generally OcUK don't sell anything that's poor quality, unless it's brand spanking new tech (and thus unknown).

Edit : I should say, post back here once you've read that thread with your questions etc. What people will likely want to know is what the PC will be used for. When you think you'd upgrade next. If you didn't like what the £500 would buy you now, would you be able to wait and come back in 6 months with more money... that kind of thing.
