Build Options - AM4/AM5

You are right I started with an estimate of £2k, and im about £1k in with what i have bought.I think maybe i should have framed the question in another way. If i asked "Parts list for a PC that will run World of Warcraft and Football Manager for 5 years at 1080/1440 ultra" i expect i would have received builds that was lower than the original £2k budget. Maybe something like £1500-£1800, then I could have picked parts for the "bling bling" :p, spending £250 on fans, or £220 on a case has inflated the "build cost" rather than the "spec cost". I guess if that factored in the 6750xt may not't seem as bad value? I'm not against sending it back, but when i look at anything like 6800/3070 its much more expensive when i didnt think i would need more than that for World of Warcraft. It seem to review OK. I'm no expert so would bow down to your superior knowledge on the topic:)

It is pretty poor value when you can get a 7600x/7700x AND with 7900 XT build for the same money :)
(I'm at work at present...I'll put up an example spec when I get home)

Your proposed spec now...to put it in layman's terms is a Ferrari with a Dacia engine.
(Not quite to that extent but you get the gist. Bling bling should be an added bonus to a powerful system, not instead of a powerful system)

Do not get to caught up in trying to get a perfectly balanced system. Any modern hardware of a certain level will be more than good enough to run WOW , it is essentially a game from 2004. If you did go for a 7800x3d with a 6750xt then you would be in a perfect situation to do a gpu upgrade in 3-4 years times and would help extend your pcs lifespan.

You are not crazy to want your PC to look nice. This is the ocuk forums where members have been watercooling pcs for over a decade, most of that these days is purely for the aestetic value and not performance related.
The NZXT mobos do look very nice and I wish the mainstream mobo manufacturers also went to those lengths to improve the looks. The previous NZXT mobos were made by Asrock but not sure if that is the situation with the B650 version. In the past there was issues with bios support and with AM5 being a relatively new platform this is quite an important factor.

You may want to have a watch of this video even though the NZXT mobo is not in the reviewed mobos- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTFUa60ozKY

The B650 mobos do vary in quality more than the X670 versions. In general I like MSi mobos but for the B650 options it looks like Gigabyte are the best choice and Asus just stink. What is clear is that most of the mobos will require bios updates and that is not something you can guarantee will happen with the NZXT mobo. I am not saying do not buy it , i am just warning you that if you have memory timing issues you will have to research and fix them yourself or potentially wait a long time for a bios update to fix them.
Yeah, I think I’m confident about either of the proposed builds running wow. The more concerning issue for me was the length of time I can expect a good performance. I was pretty happy with my current build from 2016 but it has started to slow and I saw the Hyte Y60 :p and I have the money at the moment.

Yeah I wish a lot of them were more “blacked out”, I have a sabertooth motherboard in my current build. Must be something about motherboard armour :p

Thanks for the video. I will give it a watch. Actually your last statement is the reason why this question came about. I was all ready to adopt AM5 but with the early adopting potential problems I was thinking of going to AM4 for piece of mind and move to AM5 on the next build when it’s more mature. I am very much a plug and play kinda person, I don’t want to get into all the nuances. I didn’t even know I needed to change the profiles for RAM profiles until a few years ago.

Thanks mate. It will be interested to see it :) but even if I send the gpu beck I prob have 1500-1600 now.

Yeah I get the analogy, but in my mind you are proposing a Ferrari engine in a Dacia :p nothing against them I might need a new car soon and be looking at them, and I can’t afford a Ferrari for best of both :p I think I had a “vision” of how I want it to look so I’m buying and looking at parts to meet the look rather than the other way around

I'm not sure about WoW specifically, but I can tell you that with the most recommended gaming CPUs (5800X3D, 7600 non-X/X, 13600K), you usually need a 4090 to get any meaningful difference between them in benchmarks. In many scenarios, even an i3-12100F (£100) is indistinguishable from a £500 CPU when using a midrange GPU like a 3060 or 6700 :o

Playing at 1080p (for now) does make the argument more relevant to you, but even then, do you care if WoW runs at 120 or 150 fps?

you'd start to see appreciable difference due to the cpu by using a 3090 class gpu
(wow is one of the games that heavily benefits from the X3D chips...the 5800x3d will perform as well as/slightly better than the 12th gen intel chips)

Yeah, ok that is better :p but then again from the £2k budget I wanted the Lian Li infinity fans for like 200 which was a non negotiable for my build. So it’s already 200-250 less. I guess priorities are different.

:o it’s all a bit of a minefield for casual people like me I guess. Just try and take on as much information as possible and make the best informed decisions, and you can still get it horribly wrong. I would rather have a strong consistent fps in high gameplay moments than 600 at pointless times.

I’ll be honest I’m struggling to find the joy in planning this build. Feel like at the moments they are a lot of pitfalls to fall into and it’s not an exciting experience for me which it normally is. I may just send the 6750 back and put the build on hold. I just wanted a pc that basically looks like this that plays wow and fm for 5 years :p but picking the bits seem stressful.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help anyway :)

Just to put it into perspective, On WoW on full graphics on 1440p with a 5800x3D and a 7900xTx I was getting more than 200 fps on average and on a 2080ti with the same cpu I was getting around 140-160 fps and with a 5900x with a 2080ti I was getting 90fps.

If you game on WoW you will want anything with a x3D vcache.

You can have more numbers here:

The new DDR5 CPUs will be releasing in a couple of days but they delayed the cheapest version for a month and a half.

So you have two choices:
1. Save some money now and upgrade your GPU (My recomendation).
2. Wait for the 7800x3D.

You don't know what's gonna release in a couple of years.

thing is, you can always *add* the fans later on
whereas it's relatively harder to change/upgrade the cpu (+/- platform depending on which route you go) and/or the gpu - as these will involve you having to sell on the original parts at a loss, and then buying the new parts at full price (again)

as i said, bling bling should be an added bonus to a powerful system, not instead of a powerful system

at least one of us are always here to help to make it less stressful :P
might as well make use of our "expertise" to navigate said minefield

As a wow player over the years (Been playing since patch 1.6 and was up and down and actually skipped a couple of xpacs).... nothing came close to the performance that I got from a 5800x3D.

If you are going to plan a future build. 3Dvcache is the most important aspect of the build since wow is still on a 2 core engine utiliziation and anything that helps the cores work efficiently without any bottlenecks will be beneficial.

3Dvcache is not for every gamer but It rips through strategy tick type games (Like Factorio, Rimworld and Stellaris and old games) like crazy.

See for yourself:

i'm interested to see a head-to-head with the 5800x3d vs the 7600/x
the same channel tried a 7950x and said it was "about the same" as the 5800x3d but didn't post any numbers

If you are stressed about this just take a couple of days to clear your head. There is a massive choice at the moment and in a lot of cases there are only marginal differences between the components, I will take Bragmisters experience into consideration and at times there are large differences as well just like he is showcasing with the X3D chip.

Once you know that a certain component is critical for your usecase you can narrow the components down and focus on that. So for your case it looks like a 5800X3D or wait for the 7800X3D. If you do not want to wait until April then the 5800X3D is a great gaming chip now , will be a great gaming chip next year and the year after and the year after that as well. You can build a AM4 5800x3d build with a 6700/6750xt for under £2000 and will be great for WOW and FM for the foreseeable future.

Add to it that it is a great overall gaming CPU for TODAYS top end GPUs, I am running it with a 7900xTx. At least for two generations (If nothing drastic happens... quantum GPUs?!?) of GPUs he will be fine.

I remember running through a 4690k for like 3 generations of GPUs with no issues.

In other words, If you are trying to future proof yourself... just remember that there will be always something new down the line.

If you are tight on a budget, Take the best bang for buck and return on investment NOW. If you can stretch for a couple of months it is always advisable. Maybe GPU sales crash (which is happening it seems) and you get yourself a sweet deal.

If you can't wait, Put an excel sheet... build everything around the 5800x3D. Anything that can be added later, Add it later.

Main Components are:
1- Cpu (5800x3D)
2- Mobo (B550 - X570)
Make sure that it comes with latest bios or at least ask them to flash one that can run the 5800x3d and Gigabyte just updated their bios to allow for curve optimizer.
3- Ram
Can't go wrong with CL16 3600mhz and 32GB.
4- Gpu (You have one already)
5- Cpu Cooler (5800x3d Doesn't come with one and highly recommend the AK620 since with a simple voltage offset with the newest bios) but since OCuk doesn't carry it:
Most decent one avaliable on site. Noctua is good but I see them as overpriced.

Gpu already chosen the rest will cost you 728 pounds. You can find cheaper alternatives elsewhere but these are on this site... now :)

Case, Fans, Cable mods and everything else can be added later. These are cores of your system.

Minor Edit: Main reasoning I didn't go with AIO as a cooler is well.... I see that big fan coolers are better for Ryzen CPUs, The only real alternative is to go full custom cooling and that blows the budget to the sky.

While you are 100% correct and its fine with most people, i know my personality :( I either need to do it at the start, or it wont be done, my current PC has had no sides on it for 7 years nearly, because i wanted something when i first built it, so didn't put the sides on, i never got the part, and it still had no sides put on :(

Thanks both, and thanks Bragmister for your first hand experiences in wow :p

Since the new 7000x3d chips have released i have been looking through the reviews I'm not sure its worth it for me to go for it. I think I can manage with the the 5000x3d

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 3.4 GHz 8-Core Processor - £300
NZXT N7 B550 ATX AM4 Motherboard - £230 - I know its overpriced, i just want it
Kingston FURY Renegade 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory - £120

I think those are pretty much what I'll get. Then just get a Cooler i like and Power Supply

I will decide what to do with the 6750xt, it seems to be in the same bracket when people benchmark it as much higher card. So I'm not sure how good or bad it is :( I have seen a 4070 i like, which seems to be one of the cheapest luckily, but will see if i can still return the 6750xt first if i decide to

the 6750xt will not stretch the legs of a 5800x3d on wow
