Hey everyone, thinking of getting a new pc for gaming. I am looking to spend around £1200 (base unit only).
I have never built a pc from scratch, just minor upgrades (ram, hdd) and was wondering if i should build or buy!
What are the risks of building, don't want to blow up a grands worth of parts!
Any advice would be most appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

if you have the time, and you would like to learn : build

its a great satisfaction knowing you built it

loads of help on the forums for any problems you might have

I heard installing the cpu is hard, some sort of paste is needed and was recommended a cpu-motherboard bundle from overclockers but they are all overclocked. Anyone recommend a bundle or seperate parts, and is installing a cpu hard?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah definitely build. It's cheaper, you get exactly what you want, you know what goes into it so you can fix it yourself and you get more man points. A grand you say... would you like us to put one together for you? I'm waiting for 32nm to become mainstream before i make my next build. The I9 looks breathtaking, although AMD are waiting it out for a few months.

@ Above:

It's not really, just line up the pins (only one way it can go in), drop it and press down the lever. The paste is thermal paste, and that goes on the top (sometimes, it's optional) to increase thermal conductivity between the CPU and the heatsink, which can shave a fair few degrees off the operating temperature.

Yeah, what do you think would be the best spec for gaming, max £1200. Was thinking of gtx 285 sli and i7 920 oc to 4ghz. Don't know what motherboard, thinking of maybe the p6t or p6t delux!

Thanks again everyone!

buiild it - really is easy.
the cpu and paste thing is a doddle - i was nervous of that too at first, thinking its really critical - but common sense works wonders.
for me, the hardest bit is installing windows :P

I have just built and enjoy but wide boy mate says to buy always work out cheaper.

Look at a buy option and see if you can beat the price by buying seperatley all the parts......I reckon you can not - mate just spent around that price, the Me5H Firestorm (whole package montor, Vista..etc). I tried to be beat by pricing up seperates but could not.

kebab

I remeber someone on here using a picture of kids building blocks as a way of demonstrating how easy it is to build a pc especially from new (a tad harder when your trying to mix n match old spurious bits ) but yeah build, though spend a touch of time to learn :)
