Build Log: I’m A Tight Git!
I’ve wanted a “gaming” PC in the bedroom for a while now, and because I’ve got a fairly good, but huge, PC in the lounge, I didn’t want to spend much money on a second PC. It also had to be M-ATX.
I’ve also got a fair few bits lying around that I could put to use: A “better than nothing” Nvidia 9600GT, 4GB DDR3 RAM, an SSD pillaged from my laptop, a DVD drive and a good PSU.
I ended up risking gumtree to find a good base unit to put my bits and bobs in, and after week of vaguely keeping my eye on the listings I came home with this:
So what had I got?
Competitor own brand Case
Competitor own brand PSU 300watt
Pentium G870 @3.1GHz Sandybridge
Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2PV (1155)
2GB of generic DDR3 RAM
AMD 6450 512MB
500GB Seagate HDD
Proper Windows CD + COA
My aim is to replace the sandy Pentium with a non k Ivy i5, put 8GB of RAM in it and a decent graphics card for 1080p gaming- maybe a 7850 2GB considering how cheap they are second hand now! I would be selling the both the bits that came with the PC and my stop gap components too. Maybe I can break even?
It was an office PC so naturally it was covered in dust:
An hour or so of cleaning later:
I then loaded up my components:
Yeah it’s just as messy as before, I couldn’t route many of the cables behind the chassis! This will improve as I update the components
I did try to put my Hyper 212+ cooler in there but it wouldn’t fit! So I’m stuck with the stock jet cooler for now.
Also note the SSD down the bottom in soft cloth!
My shopping list:
CPU cooler
3.5” to SSD size adapter
Ivy i5
7850 2GB or similar
I’m also going to repaint the case, maybe paint the silver bits white or something too.
I’ll update this and report how cheap I can go!
