I`m trying to put together final specs for my x79 build. The cpu (3930K) is on it`s way via RoyalMail, and everything else is pretty much waiting to be ordered/decided..

What i have so far and need help finalising are as follows:

Ram (32Gb): GSkillRipjawZ 1866Mhz 8x4Gb or a couple of Corsair 16Gb packs.
Mobo: Completely undecided which brand/product to go for.
Cooler: CorsairH100 though undecided about that.
PSU: Also undecided on specific unit - prob 650Watt Corsair.
GPU: GTX 570 i think.
Case: Corsair one probably, not interested in uber-gamer looks.
SSD: Random 120Gb one.

As i say pretty much undecided on specifics for a few things. The mobo / cooling and PSU i`d really like some advice on, don`t want to make the wrong choices there and regret it afterwards!

The system will be used primarily for multimedia ( ie 3d modelling / rendering / photoshop / after-effects etc ) and some BF3 action on the side. Hoping to overclock the 3930K to maybe 4.6/4.7Ghz ( don`t want to go nuts as long renders will push the temps a LOT ).

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £159.98
1 x Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive £154.99
1 x Corsair Obsidian 650D Gaming Midi Tower - Black £139.98
1 x Antec High Current Gamer 750W Quad Rail '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £76.98
Total : £531.94 (includes shipping : FREE).

You can change your case if you wish but i would go for 750w psu in case you add another gpu. The asrock extreme 4 is a popular board with great reviews.

The OP needs an X79 motherboard for the i7-3930K.

My budget is around the 1600 mark give or take a couple of hundred ( edit: including the 469 i`ve just spent on the cpu ).

I`m not really comfortable spending for example 300 on an advanced mobo unless it`s really giving me something the others are not, i won`t be constantly tweaking, just looking for a setup that works.. Hence the indecision about mobos :/

What`s with the modular PSU - what is the difference with a modular one?

There are a few fully modular PSU's but most described as modular are semi-modular.

They have a few fixed power cables (usually the essential ones) and then you only attach the ones you need for the rest of your components.

Less clutter and easier cable management.

Cheers Surveyor.

I was thinking 650 watt would be enough? One gpu ( no plans on crossfire ). I`ve heard SB-E are really power hungry but would 650 be enough to run this system with 1 gpu / 1 ssd / 1 hdd ?

Yeah I'm fairly sure 650 would be enough if you don't plan on an extra GPU. Though it wouldn't hurt to have more headroom for overclocking

EDIT: I'm not sure actually, if you're overclocking you may need 750W, I'd get 750W to be safe. Someone else might know more...

Now i just need the rest of it :)

After reading that the 1Gb GTX cards aren`t enough to play Battlefield3 properly @1080p i`m having a rethink about the GPU choice..

Could somebody explain the most obvious differences between the likes of the 560Ti and the GTX 570?

For BF3 on a single card you need at least a GTX 570.

The reason behind this however has nothing to do with Vram.
