Building a Carport

I've been thinking of making my own stand-alone carport on the driveway, possibly of double size. Was just wondering if anyone has done this before, estimated costs, problems you have run into and any other general tips. I'm sick and tired of birds crapping all over my car, and annoying bits of tree falling all over the car every morning

Not quite. It's similar to a garage in that it holds a car, but doesn't have 4 walls and a door. It's more like a canopy. 4 posts and a roof. I'm kinda cheap right now.

Carport?

Is that a fancy name for a garage?

No.

It's basically a structure to cover a car, or area, obviously without any sides to it, so completely unsecure, compared to say a garage.

Lots of houses used to have them, but they seem to have become a lot less popular, if anything because aesthetically, the one we used to have look pretty rubbish.

They can also be built with sides as well. But security isn't really my main concern. The car in itself is pretty secure anyway. I just hope it doesn't cost too much. Do you think a basic one is achievable with around £500 for materials.

The cost is totally up to you. You could build one with 4 buckets, 4 pieces of wood, some rocks and a sheet of tarpaulin.

It may or may not be of any use though :p

For a second, i thought you meant one of those garages can have a swivel...where you can store a number of cars but it is the same size...not describing it well...

^ THAT!

That is so awesome, I want one! Only problem being i'd need cars to fill it with..

Carport makes me think of timber holding it up with corregated look cheap plastic on top that goes mossy and stuff after a while.

if you do something like with corrugated PVC roof and wooden supports then you should very easily be able to make it for less than 500quid. a lot less

I suspect £500 would probably get the materials for a basic one, metal pillers (in a reasonable amount of concrete to hold it securely), and wooden frame for the roofing sheets to be fastened to, depending on where you get them from/what you use.
I suspect the problem would be making sure it'll be rigid when it's windy, as they have a large area to catch the wind, so it'll need to be fairly solidly built (especially if it's in the open with nothing to act as a wind break).

The way they were/are built here (70's houses), is one side is supported by a wall, the other by metal pillers with additional supports in the middle, and a wooden frame the sheeting lays on (although this is for semi detached car ports, where the wall is actaully also the boundary wall).

My dad took ours down many years ago because basically it wasn't much cop, due to it's location the wind was not kind to it ;)

I'm not sure if you'd need planning permission to put one up?
I suspect if you have a look round there is a good chance there'll be a company who will either be able to supply a "kit" for making one (all the parts and plans), or even just proven plans for one.

Nexus, I suspect they've gone out of favour because they take up room that could better be put towards another house (as far as the builders are concerned :P ) and don't give you the relative security/generally useful space a proper garage does.

*Allowing for the cars to be about 5 meters long, by 2 wide, and the sheets as the standard 3x0.6 size, and of the cheapy type (at about £7 a sheet), you would need about 15 sheets (although with a fair bit of wastage).

Wow, that autopark system is awesome. If only I had enough cars to use it though! Thanks for all the advice, especially Werewolf. Also the floor isn't paved yet. We were planning on doing that sometime this year, so should I just wait until paving is done in the future or build it on grass for the time being? This will probably be my first DIY project, so i'm kinda clueless at the moment.

you might want to check the planning restrictions first because you'll be limited to size and depending on location might to restricted to how it looks too :(

You might need planning permission for a double size carport - http://www.diydata.com/planning/planregperm/planning_rules.php#garages
