Posted about this before last year when we were doing the concreting & having the walls put up in another thread which some of ya seemed to be interested in, so now that things have started moving again i decided to put up another progress thread.

This thing was supposed to be built by now but circumstances at the time put a stop to it.

Anyway, here is the old thread with the concreting & walls going up -

And now for the roof-

If all goes to plan (i know it wont) the roof should be built & in place in around 4-6 weeks, anyway, here is some progress on our first day putting the roof together.

Major pain in the arse getting all the angles right on this first truss, going to test it with a fair bit more weight than it'll ever take in real life then make another 10 of them, that's gonna take a while!

Yeah, we've had a council engineer come & check everything stage by stage too, but to be honest when my car is gonna be parked under it i want to see for myself that it aint gonna cave in if we have a few feet of snow.

So it's gonna get loaded up with a rather large amount of concrete blocks.

Oh i remember this, taking your time :D.

Are you going to be tiling the roof?

He's not taking as long as my old man, I think it took about 20 years start to finish with our garage ;)

Iamzod, I know the feeling, despite the fact the calculations have been done by the professionals it's still something you'd like to check yourself if possible ;)

With our garage our plans called for 9x3 inch timbers for the main supports (original plans were for several layers of ply, then felt, we went with profiled steel in the end - which weighed less), and tested it by two of us hanging off the beam once the first one was up :D

I would question why you're worried about a few feet of snow though, we're lucky to get an inch a year here :p

Thread revival after many years!!!!!!

Work on this garage and the car i was going to be putting in it stopped shortly after this thread was posted due to me meeting my girlfriend and spending all my money & time on her!

Not to mention moving in with her too in early 2010.

Expensive things these girlfriends!

Anyway, still have the Capri and therefore still need a garage so work started again back in summer 2010, bet my dads neighbours loved him for leaving this half built so long  . Lots of roof trusses were needed, 12 i think from memory, these took forever to build as it was all done from scratch with wood, nails & truss plates bought from some place local.

The trusses were just sat stored for almost 2 years, but the roof got built properly in the summer, doors fitted, there is now electricity in there etc.

As of January it looked like this after the roof was done, doors on, walls rendered, everything painted. Old garage came down too which was made of lovely asbestos, about 3 days after this last pic was took it got buried under 15 inches of snow, so at least we know the roof can take it :)

Still lots of work to do on drainage, obviously lots more concrete to go down for the new driveway, the ceiling and insulation needs to go up and then the lighting can be properly fitted although there is now electricity in there but currently only a few plug sockets connected up for temporary lighting/using tools.

I have my fingers crossed it'll be done this summer but it's taken forever so far so i aint holding my breath! :o

That looks awesome, i'd love to do something like that some day. Looks a little odd with the garage door not being central though.

What has been the total cost and man hours of the project so far? What are the forecast costs for completion?
