Hi everyone, I have upgraded various PC's over the years based on shop bought systems but this will be my first ground up build.

It will be an upgrade-able gaming PC for my son.
He plays games such as COD BO3, Fallout 4 and Minecraft.

I have been offered the following as a starting point and have added my suggestions for components. I would value any suggestions for alternative parts bearing in mind I don't have a substantial budget. (£400-500 on top of starting package.)

Package consisting of:
Corsair 240 case
8gb Hyper X ram
H81M Motherboard
2x Blue LED Aerocool Fans
2x Blue UV SATA Cables.

I have:
2x 500GB SATA drives
Keyboard
Mouse
Monitor

I am looking at adding the following:
Core i5 6600K Processor
NVidia GTX 960 2GB Graphcs Card

Would these parts produce a decent performing PC for him and what else would you suggest adding?

Thanks in advance.
Bruce.

I believe the H81 is an 1150 socket motherboard so wouldn't take a 6600K. You'd need something like a 2500K/3570K for the H81 (which I don't remember as supporting overclocking like the P/Z boards, but I could be wrong...) or an 1151 socket motherboard if you're wanting the 6600K.

I couldn't comment on the 960 as I've been out of the loop for a bit, but it would probably be fine at 1080p or below.

An SSD is very nice if you can fit one into the budget, even if it's only a small one it will improve the experience of Windows/applications dramatically and will give you enough room for a good few games if you go for at least a 120GB drive.

You'll also probably want a better CPU cooler, but I will rely on other knowledgeable souls to suggest one as my suggestions would probably be out of date!

Corsair 240 case
Not a bad option, although is Micro ATX/ITX - so need to bear in mind - if you are paying for all of this "starting point", then personally wouldn't bother - Start fresh and put whatever this would cost towards the build.
8gb Hyper X ram
Likely to be DDR3, which doesn't make huge sense for a new build
H81M Motherboard
as Tediore said - is an older socket, not compatible with Skylake e.g. 6600K
2x Blue LED Aerocool Fans
2x Blue UV SATA Cables.
Wouldn't worry about either of these

2x 500GB SATA drives
Keyboard
Mouse
Monitor
Fine to use all of this - assume the monitor is at least a 1080P? if not then will likely want to be upgraded in the near future.

Core i5 6600K Processor
Good choice although at this sort of budget I would save money and get an I3, and put more money towards the graphics card.

NVidia GTX 960 2GB Graphcs Card

I would be looking at a R9 380 4GB - should perform better in most games, and 4GB should be a better choice in the longer term.

Something like this would be my suggestion:
My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £531.13
(includes shipping: £13.20)
