Building a lean-to workshop?

I'd like a bigish garden shed (Minimum size would be 14' X 10')

After looking around most are around £600-£1000 price range. A friend suggested building a lean-to against the garage. I could then have an internal door from the garage to the lean-to and a solid wall to fix things against. I was also thinking of insulating it so I could store items that would suffer if condensation was a problem.

The primary use would be to store my motor bike, be a place to build engines and a bit of storage.

I'm trying to get an idea of costs and the legalities of building on in my garden.

Any help is appreciated.

AFAIK - if its deemed a 'temporary' structure then you dont have to apply for planning permission... however as the price to submit an application would probably be inconsequential, it might be easier to just check with the local authority planning office...

I seem to recall my dad (when his workshop was turned into another bedroom) purchased a similar size shed to your needs (in GRP/PVC or something....) I'll try and find out the manufacturer for you.. but it seems like the lean to might be an idea!

This is what I want to do if my first place doesn't have a garage. Not so worried about access directly from the house but it's a cool idea. Could you adapt a large gaden shed to do the same job? I'd have though the cost would be roughly the same though. Some people seem to be scared of wooden garages but it seems the ideal solution to me, especially when it comes to planning permission. Build it well and it'll be watertight, warm and strong.

Jonny69, not sure if it was directed at me but here goes!

I think you could find a comparable woodens structure for a fraction of the price of a PVC/GRP one - so that could be a good idea! - and you're right. Build it well and alls good!

My garage is detached and set back from the house. I'm open to any suggestions and have looked at a standard 'garden shed' but like the idea of a stronger structure.

Luckily two of my best mates are in the right trades. One is a builder and the other an architect who specialises in GRP

Some of the car guys I know have built wooden garages and I thought 'I could do that' when I saw them because I'm no bricklayer. Anything would do though if it's the right price and suitable for the application, there must be loads of prefabricated parts out there.
