hi guys,
I am looking at building a local intranet to make accessing file on my file server easier. I currently have 8 500gb hard drives giving around 4tb of space which is filling up pretty fast. As you can imagine these files are all over the place and i was thinking of putting together a local intranet to help me search and access these files a lot fast and easier. I also have people on work placement coming in so i want to use this site as a point of reference for these people i.e. user guides for software etc.

Basically what i want is to open my browser and there to be a site designed by me that has all the information about my company. I was also thinking about photos. I take a hell of a lot of photos and it takes ages to look through them all trying to find the one your after, but i was thinking if i give each file a relevant name and store it on its own drive it would be easier to find, i kinda want to setup something like my own stock photos site only locally.

It would also be great if we were able to do this

Have a page on the local site for different projects, all current and older projects would be stored here. When a user clicks on a project it would bring up a new page with all that projects contents and information and from there we could search just within that specific project.

What do ou guys think? Is this easily done or maybe you guys have a better idea, i am open to suggestions.

Things you may need to know:

Server is running windows 2003 server
6 main clients access it at any one time
regular laptop users will plug in and want to access the same information
files normally stored on the server are:
photoshop
premiere
dreamweaver (Full websites)
after effects
sound booth
word excel
powerpoint
and a few others

I hope this all made sense guys and i look forward to reading your suggestions

Sounds like a fairly good idea for a portal. I'm not a web designer so i have no idea how easy it would be to pull off. We have a similar thing. It doesn't hold the files itself but it links to other places that do, aswell as hosting web apps. It is as that name suggests a "portal" A gateway from one place into one or many other places.

Sharepoint portal.

I've been playing with Sharepoint Services this week, it's got quite a lot of nice stuff for a free app (especially if you don't mind making pages etc. for yourself).
