Building a machine for WoW

I like to have my pizza on a dish actually.

And WoW is actually quite intensive if you want to run it on Ultra. Yeah, the graphics are dated and the GPU might not be overtaxed, but it is still an MMO with tons of people who like to congregate in the same areas.

And to be honest, having gone from having to run just about everything except solo'ing on minimum to getting to max out the graphics, it is a completely different game. Thus, if it is your main game and you really enjoy it, spending some of your money on a machine that can run it with bells and whistles is not a bad idea.

Fully agree

Going from flying in northrend on your mount and not being able to see where your going, constantly checking the map, to seeing across the entire zone and never using the map lol.

My 3 year old card can max it with ease so I don't understand you lot but I do have a quad core.

I think the commonly accepted truth about WoW is that it is a lot more CPU intensive than GPU intensive. Old cards probably fare well, especially under less strenous graphical settings. And to be fair, I do not see the reason to have shadows on max unless you are just trying to enjoy the scenery, in which case you probably are not doing things that are otherwise stressful for the computer.

That being said, there are stuff there that will test your GPU, but it is not the end all be all of WoW and its outdated graphics.

It is a strange game in that it is basically really old, but they keep on adding extra stuff to it, graphics wise. So the basic appearance is not taxing and will run on everything, yet there are options that will really kill your fps if your rig is in no way modern. Thus you have a game that does not really look like that much, but will have some features that really post-dates the basicstuff. The game's own success has kind of killed off the chance for any fundamental graphics updates.

can't believe half the "lol £1500 for a wow machine, lol" responses, so what, the guy asked for opinions on machines not on what you deem to be acceptable or not, if it will make you laugh further I bought my i7 950 setup just for wow, I even went further and installed a BT LES 100 fibre for my home connection, why? because I wanted to and sure it doesnt max out my computer so I can alt tab around and run as much junk in the background as I like without ever having to frown at delays, the connection provides me with redundancy thanks to a load balanced adsl backup line, the consequences of the MT going offline are a serious consideration - more companies should promote redundant connections to the wow community I expect a fair few people would adopt them :)

mildly tongue in cheek but come on if people have the money and want to spend it surely it's their lookout?

my 6800, single core computer played wow maxed at a smooth 30fps - I played until 2007 I dont know if its had any texture overhauls since?

I believe it has had two (though only 100% certain of one, I have not really played the game in any regular fashion since 2008). Neither have done anything much except make the game harder to play on an old computer or a laptop.

I'm lucky if I get 20fps in a busy Dalaran and that's with simple shadows and half draw distance, although my system is showing it's age (Athlon x2 @2.9, 2gig ram, 8800gt).

New PC soon methinks.

my modest pc didnt run well in dalaran and other busy places, however in dungeons and raids it ran fine. i can see why youd need a half decent pc if you want everythign on full whack though

What exactly is BT LES 100 fibre? and where can I buy it?

Sure sure, that's all well and nice.

But seriously... You didn't pay over £4k for it did you? Or am I reading something wrong?

it was closer to 6k including monitors and other associated stuff, but hey its also a work machine so they covered most of the cost, only thing I had to pay for were the two 295gtx's which couldn't remotely be related to work :p

the connection is provided thanks to me essentially being one of the DR "offices" so I need to have a direct link to our datacentres for remote management purposes should the external cloud fail :)
