I've configured a prebuilt system from cyberpower UK before, but I thought this time I'd skip the middle man and build it myself.

Is there anything drastically wrong with this combination of parts?

you need to remove the link before you get banned.

there is nothing drastically wrong there.

A modular psu may help keeping cables tidy.

Can you not get a matched pair of sticks instead of two individual sticks?

What's the difference between two sticks and a matched pair of sticks?

I'll get a modular PSU instead, tidy cables are definitely preferable

EDIT

Is that allowed instead of the link?

1. you need to remove that link before you get banned!!
2. you are better getting a 2500k
3. you are better getting 2x2gb sticks instead of a single 4gb stick
and
4. you are better going for windows 7 home premium as it is cheaper

how about buying from OCUK?

Changed the case (I just really like the look of this one), changed to 7 Pro (actually, maybe I won't need XP Mode and I'll get Home Premium instead), got a smaller SSD and a Corsair 950w PSU instead (looking after the pennies).

I'll sleep on it and possibly order tomorrow.

EDIT:
Do I need any extra cables, or will each component come with the required bits? What about tools? I have an anti-static wrist strap, but afaik atm all I need are some case fans and a non-magnetic screwdriver and possibly a tiny spanner.

Yeah, I probably don't need Professional.

I was aiming for 2 HDD's in a RAID1 setup for data, and the other one as a "slow" program drive for the games (and unimportant data) I don't want to spend SSD space on.

Two optical drives is just a habit. Now that I think about it, with the abundance of steam games and official patches that remove CD checks, maybe I don't need a 2nd one.

I thought maybe there'd be nuts to tighten, but if it's all screws, so much the better.

Thanks for the cooler suggestion, rexton.

Final change, after seeing minor complaints about the Asus mobo bios, I switched to this MSI one. I did see the news about the p67 recall, but if I'm reading this correctly, the 6G ports are unaffected, which is fine by me, I don't care if the optical drive on the 4G port slows down next year.

(unfortunately when I attempted to order my cards were not accepted. Guess the jump from "groceries at morrisons" to "unreasonably powerful gaming PC" scared someone at the bank)

It's built, it's amazing. 25 second boot times. Thanks for the advice, guys!

EDIT: although I should mention that the case fans were male connectors and the motherboard also had male connectors, so I didn't have enough 3 pin to 4 pin adapters for every fan. Only a minor issue though as temps seem fine.
