Hi fellers,

A mate has asked me to build an HTPC for him after having seen my own setup. This will be done slightly differently though, for mine I used older parts and found the case to fit (a large Antec NSK2400), whereas this time all the parts will be purchased new. I'm a bit out of the loop with the latest hardware, so would appreciate some advice on the following:

Case: Would like this to be small enough to fit in a 'standard' sized TV stand. My Antec is so deep that I struggled to find a stand that it would fit in. Would be prepared to accept smaller hardware (e.g. half-height video / TV cards) to achieve a smaller case assuming these parts are available.

Video card: Would like the best passively cooled card possible here for the best quality video playback - including Blu-Ray. Half-height requirement going to be a problem here?

TV Card: Am wanting a dual tuner freeview card, nothing more fancy than that, but as above, it may have to be half-height depending on the case. I personally prefer Hauppauge cards.

Everything else: Looking for an Intel system with an ASUS motherboard. Price IS a consideration, in the sense that I'm looking for the best value for money parts, rather than the cheapest or most powerful system. Overall I'd say keeping noise to a minimum is the most important consideration, hence passive cooling on components and big case fan(s) if possible.

Appreciate any advice!

Blu ray pushes up the cost

This is a mini ITX system (smallest available) doesnt use asus mobo but is intel, havent included the TV card as I dont know too much about them myself, but the mobo does have a spare PCI-E slot to accomadate one. The onboard gfx will be plenty but you will also need a slimline SATA adapter for the optical drive

Sony NEC Optiarc BC-5500S Blu Ray Reader & DVD±RW SATA Notebook Drive (Black) - OEM £149.99 (£130.43)
Zotac GeForce 9300-ITX WiFi Mini-ITX (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £113.99 (£99.12)
Silverstone Sugo SG05B Mini-ITX Case - Black (300w PSU) £89.99 (£78.25)
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ) £59.98 (£52.16)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5300 "LGA775 Core 2" 2.60GHz (800FSB) - Retail £49.98 (£43.46)
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel (KHX6400D2LLK2/4G) £45.99 (£39.99)
Total: £509.92

Your other option here would be to go for mATX, however Id recomend AMD over intel for this, their integrated gfx solutions are much better, the blu ray is cheaper with this option as full size instead of slimline, however youre paying more for a full effect HTPC case, you could even include one of the quad core athlons if its going to used for encoding

Antec Fusion Remote HTPC Case - Black (No PSU) £124.99 (£108.69)
LG CH08LS10 8x Blu-Ray Reader/16x DVD±RW - Black (Retail) £81.98 (£71.29)
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ) £59.98 (£52.16)
Asus M4A785D-M Pro AMD 785G (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £57.99 (£50.43)
AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 245 2.90GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £50.99 (£44.34)
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel (KHX6400D2LLK2/4G) £45.99 (£39.99)
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 420W Power Supply £39.99 (£34.77)
Total : £461.92

95thrifles .. personally i wouldnt bother with the seperate psu .. if he can find one the micro antec fusion would be the better option + probably cheaper ( not checked ) lol infact .. my set-up in sig :)

although i didnt do my research when i bought the sony blu ray ... damn thing doesnt do cd writing :( i'd pick the lg if i had it again to pick.. impulse buy

Thanks for the replies fellers!

Think I'm going to stick with m-atx on this one. Seems like the best Antec case is the NSK1380 - takes full sized PCI cards which will be useful for TV card choice.

Just had a look at the AMD system you suggested. Hadn't thought of using onboard video since I assumed an external solution would be required for HD playback. I guess this isn't the case. My friend is wanting to play Blu-Ray discs and also HD .MKV files, though from what I understand, these are entirely processor accelerated. He'll be connecting the system to a 46" Samsung LCD TV with an Analogue video connection.
