This is a rough guide to my current system:
Gigabyte GA-7VA KT400A ,AMD Athlon 3200+, 2 Gig Corsair TwinX 3200C2PT, Maxtor 120GB 7200rpm, BFG 7800GS OC, SB X-Fi XtremeMusic
As you can see its a little dated :)

Looking to do first solo build around May and have about £800 give or take a few £'s and going to nick a few componants from my old system. Its not totally rigid as its a couple of months away and a lot can change in that time.
If its worth invest a small amount more for a big gain then yeah I'm probably going to succumb to temptation.

Have a gander over my ideas to follow. Like I say its my first solo build attempt so something might not be compatible, the gfx may be limited by the CPU, a few quid somewhere may give me major bang for buck...... I dont know???
Feel free to comment lend a bit of advice or laugh, dont mind just happy of any help advice.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM
Should last me a good while

CPU Cooling: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775).
Its cheap and I have read good reviews on it.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X38-DS4 Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Ok its not X48 but reviews I have read said X38 - X48 is not a huge difference in performance

RAM: Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500C5 TwinX (2x1GB)
Now I may stay 2Gig or go 4Gig unsure of operating system as of yet. But will probably be giving Vista a miss and stick with XP till the next OS from what I have read so far.

Graphics: EVGA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB KO GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
Now this will almost definitly change with all the Nvidia 9's coming up. So looking for decent reviews and comparisons. Also effecting pricing so may even jump to a GTX its way open at the mo.

Sound: X-Fi XtremeMusic
This is in my old system and will come across

Hard Drive: Maxtor Diamondmax 21 250GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM

CD/DVD Drive: Plextor DVD±RW burner, PX-800A, 18x, 8x Dual, DVD-RAM
This is one of two in my old system and will come across

Monitor: 20" Viewsonic VX2025wm
What I am using at the mo.

Input: Saitek Eclipse and Microsoft Habu
What I am using at the mo.

Power Supply: Coolermaster Real Power 700w Modular Power Supply
Should pack enough bang for the job

Case: Coolermaster RC-1000 Cosmos Silent Full Tower Case
Like the look and features and only ever used your super cheap bog standard cases till now. Should be a jump in coolness in two ways for me

Sound output: Just some crappy cheap Advent 2:1 Speaker system which I hardly ever use and my trusty Seinnheiser PC151 headset which I use 99% of the time.
What I am using at the mo.

I mean with it 2-3 months away so much can change as in new products , prices etc in this game it really is totally open at the mo and just my first ideas.
Thanks in advance for any help

Looks good to me. I would just replace the Hard drive with a 500gb which are faster, hold more, and are not a maxtor :p.

Why will you not consider Vista, its stable, works great, and as an OS you cant fault it.

Save yourself £32 and get the Corsair XMS2 2GB 6400C4.

On 2.2v it clocks nicely to 8500 speeds on 5-5-5-15 :)

I have it at 1066 with above settings and it never gets any hotter than 47c even after 4hrs of gaming. Stable as a rock also.

Depends if you want to overclock though!

Hmmm first solo build (had help on my last).

Tried a bit of overclocking before but not to much success.... though I didnt blow anything up :p

So maybe i'll look into it
