Building a Old PC

I am a sucker for nostaglia. I've recently thought about putting together an old PC, something to take me back to the 1990's as I enjoy a lot of games from the early to late 90's. Some of these old games today aren't so functional due to things such as graphics cards (and their drivers), multi-core processors, and a 64-bit environment. Anyway, I just thought it would be a fun venture to take on.

So, just for fun, if you guys were piecing together an 90's computer, which components would you use and which OS? Everything has to be from the late 80's to the early 2000's, say 1988-2002 (just to allow some leeway). So, no Windows XP for example. Reasons can be anything from having a powerful enough system to copy with late-90's software, to just personal preference and personal nostalgia.

Begin!

For personal nostalgia - my first PC...

486 DX2 66, 4MB RAM, Vesa local bus 2D graphics, 350MB HDD, Soundblaster 16, Double speed CD-ROM, DOS 6.2, Win 3.1, Doom, MI2, TFX, Indycar Racing, X-Wing, TIE Fighter.

If you haven't suffered writing multiple autoexec.bat and config.sys boot files, you haven't lived.

Can't you do all this on a VM though?

I could. Though I'd have to upgrade to a better edition of my Windows 7, which isn't that cost saving. But as I said, I'm just a sucker for the nostaglia factor. Plus, it gives me a reason to buy a CRT :P

I always wanted an Abit BP6 and dual overclocked celerons back when they came out in 99 or so, but I was only 15 so I never had the money, but I'd love to go back and build that system one day! I think given the era it would probably be Win98SE but going back further, I have fond memories of XTree Gold on DOS from my childhood!

I'd build a 486 DX4-100 with 16mb of RAM, 3.5" + 5.25" floppy drives, and 200mb harddrive for true nostalgia - good luck finding an Intel DX4 though, they are like hens teeth!
