Building a secure system

Right, before I begin, I'm not entirely sure if this is the most suitable section of the board to be posting this thread so if an admin would like to move the thread to a more suitable location please feel free to move it.

Ok, now that's out the way, I can now begin. Basically, I have a growing interest in security these days and I'd like to build a secure system using an old laptop that I've had laying around the house for a while. Now this machine won't be my day to day system and will only be used from time to time.

Now what I'm looking to do is build a system using a Linux distro. The reason behind using Linux is as we all know, Linux has proven to be a far more secure environment than the likes of Windows. Now I must stress, I'm still getting my bearings with Linux but this is another project to help me learn the ins and outs. With regards to what distro in particular to be using, I'm still undecided. A friend had recommended Privatix but I feel the website lacks enough documentation to help me on my way. From what I can gather though, it seems like a suitable distro for what I need it for.

Now Ideally, I'd like to use TrueCrypt to go about creating a hidden OS since it's something I've never done before. I've used TrueCrypt in the past with encrypted file containers and full disk encryption but never ventured into the world of hidden Operating Systems. Now could this be done using a USB pen? The reason I ask is simply because I'd like to be able to boot from either CD or USB so nothing is written to disk. I have a 64GB USB stick laying around somewhere. My only concern is it's USB 2.0, not 3.0 so its performance may prove to be a little on the slow side, but this is only me speculating.

Privatix offers something similar to what I'm looking for. This was copied from their FAQ section over on their website:

If a computer doesn't support booting usb-hdd

If a computer can not boot from your usb-device, use the privatix starter cd:

Burn the file boot.iso which was created in the not encrypted boot-partition of your usb-device while the privatix installation to a cd and use it as boot-cd.

This special boot-cd will start the privatix system from your usb-device, even if booting from usb-hdd is not supported by the bios.

Now if someone could help me out, it would certainly be much appreciated. With the weekend nearly upon is, it will be a good little project to work on with a couple beers in hand whilst I'm off. I tried a quick search around online for tutorials but failed to come up with anything really worth while.

If I have missed anything or there is any other questions you would like to ask, don't hesitate to ask. I'm still new to all this and I'm really just testing out the waters.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly! :D

I suspect you'd get more responses in the 'Windows and other software' forum. It's not really a hardware question. Hopefully a mod will move it for you.
