Building a system for the old man...

Looks good.

A bit overpowered for what you need but that not really too bad of a thing.

I would change the SSD to either one of the Intel ones in mine or Idleman's build though as they are supposedly more reliable than the corsair ones.

Good thinking batman ;)

I'm not just a pretty face lol

As we are just spitballing ideas, how about this?

Obviously you could trim a few quid off and I'm using the free P&P but it's a great base to build from. Could easily drop in a 2nd hand i5K much later if his computer use gets more serious and overclock it. Mobo includes wifi too which is nice

You guys are awesome lol...

The old fella actually gave me a budget of £600 but I think that really would be overkill for checking his e-mail :D

I think mentioning the word 'overclock' to pops would produce a very confused look on his face!

I find using Cars as an analogy can help a lot.

If you think of 1Ghz as 1 litre and CPU cores as cyclinders. RAM is the fuel, how much there is and how fast it's pumped into the engine etc etc

Overclocking would be seen as tuning. The K edition CPUs are NOT limited so you can get more power from them. There will be a point where more cooling would be wise.

Have a chat and see what he thinks. Maybe he would like a build to go under the TV a HTPC. You could install XBMC and stream videos all from the comfort of his sofa :) Maybe he'd like his DVD collection ripped to it for easy playback and the DVDs can go in the loft to clear space ;)

His current system:

AMD Athlon 64x 2 dual core processor 5000+

2GB RAM

Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (build 2600)

ASUSTeK Computer INC. M2A-VM HDMI 1.XX

250GB HDD

ATI Radeon X1200 Series [Display adapter]
