Building a system

As I started uni I think now is the best time to upgrade/start from scratch my PC.
I used to know a lot about PC's some 10 years ago but its hard to keep up so I will need your help.

I am studying architecture so I will be working with media. CAD, photoshop, 3D rendering as well as some video editing. I don't play much games (apart from some shooters to test the graphics at the beginning). Overclocking is not the most important thing, I prefer my system to be slower but more stable.

my budget around 300 to 800 pounds.

before starting naming products I've chosen I want to know few things.
Is it wise to build a pc with big upgrade in mind? I don't think I will upgrade it any time soon so maybe it will be better to build new pc in some 3/4 years time(as I'm doing now)?
How important GPU will be for me? I'm thinking of using 2 monitors (24") in the future. Do I need to be thinking about 2 cards?
What to look for in choosing memory? Should I go for max number of GB's or maybe smaller number but with higher MHz rate?
I got Corsair TX650W. I use a lot of usb devices (external sound card) and pc crashes if I plug more than 6 of them. I'm guessing its because of my mobo (asrock 775). Will it be enough for the new mobo (whatever it will be)?
How important is the case? The way I'm thinking now is that I should go for size (eATX?). I'm not fussed about the appearance or noise and I can always drill some extra holes and install new fan if it gets too hot.
New vs used. I don't want to splash a lot of money buying new if I could go for used and feel no difference. I wouldn't go for a used hdd as its the most important bit for me. Is anything else that's a nono?

Whatever PC you build you will want to upgrade at some point, weather thats GPU, hard drive, case etc...

You will need a powerful GPU yes, for 2 24" moniters and CAD design your GPU will have allot of load on it. SLI/Crossfire is a option yes, but there are cards that offer the same power but cost more £.

I would look at AT LEAST 8GB for your needs, speed wise just get over 10666 and you will be fine, somthing like Corsair Vengeance will suit you nicley.

Hmm....tricky one, if you are going to be using a powerfull GPU then yes it might be worth looking into getting a bigger PSU

For cases you dont really have to worry, just pick the one you like and be done with it. I would reccomend the corsair 650D though. You will want a nice large air cooled case, companys like antec, cooler master and some corsairs will be fine.

Not really...just make sure you know what you are getting is right for you :), at your budget you will proberly consider used hardware.

is there any reason not to choose 1155 instead of 1156?

No, SK1155 is a very good line of processors and will suit your needs for CAD well.

freddie covered your questions pretty well.

if your buying to replace bits in a current system then pretty much anything can be brought 2nd hand without too much of a problem, just a question of how trust worthy the other party is.

top end of your budget, could replace the graphics card with something less powerful if required.

psu you have will be fine.

included an ssd for your o/s important programs, then a 2tb for storage, if you dont need that much swap it for something like the samsung f3 500gb.
