Hi all - my friend wants me to build him a PC for about £500

tough challenge but think it is possible - even capable of playing Crysis in good conditions (obviously not all max, but who can?).

I do not have any personal experience with the following components, on paper they seem capable and quality. But I was wondering if you had experience with them and had any comments about them?

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Retail / OcUK Value IP35 Pro Intel P35 Motherboard / 2GB OCZ PC-8500 Dual Channel DDR2 Kit - Bundle

OcUK GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD2500AAKS)

Coolermaster CM-690 Dominator / Coolermaster Real Power 520w Modular Power Supply - Bundle

Price incl ship and VAT £486.37

thx for info

PS - he already has peripherals (keyboard, 19" monitor etc...) + trying to convince him to buy a 22" Samsung monitor as they are below £200 + not really worth going for 24" due to massive price difference

Thx Dark Angel :)

This is what I am going to suggest

OcUK GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Black Dragon DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GB22GB6400C4DC)

Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L Intel P31 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Samsung SpinPoint F1 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD502IJ)

Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 2.53GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

Antec Sonata III Piano Black Quiet Case - EarthWatts 500W PSU

TOTAL £404.13 incl VAT and shipping

I opted for only 2G memory - he is using XP no need for 4G + went for pricier E7200 with 3mb cache.

He doesn't want to overclock right now (although I am sure once I show him how easy he will want to, but baby steps for now :)) + The CPU you suggested is only 1mb cache and honestly would not recommend big overclocks without Artic Thermal paste and better cooler like Artic Freezer 7 which should be able to fit in rather small Antec case (otherwise go for a Noctua, Scythe or Tuniq but they get very big) sure we will be doing sooner than later

cheers

The price difference on the monitors isn't all that huge, the OcUK Value 24" display is only about £210 at the moment.

That system is all compatible but other than that it might be worth considering Dark_Angel's specification, particularly if you might be overclocking.

Samsung 22" is better IMO. Very good make (never had a problem with Samsung in past and they last) + faster response time + 8800GT card is better at more moderate resolution and once you start pumping out 1900+ res you really see the difference with higher end GFX cards
