Building Core Duo/Quad Core System with OC'ing in mind. Advise Please.

Hi Guys,
This is what I am thinking of getting:
E6600 CPU
Asus P5B Deluxe
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-8500 1066MHz SLI-Ready Edition Dual Channel DDR2 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=MY-082-OC
I am planning to then get either a single 8800GTX or the new ATI 2950GTX, depending price and performance etc.


But if my bargain will stretch that far I will go for;
Q6600 CPU
Asus Commander MB or Asus P5N32-E Sli
CZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-8500 1066MHz SLI-Ready Edition Dual Channel DDR2
What do you guys think?

If it's future proofing you're thinking of, without a doubt I would wait for all major brands to release their Intel P35 chipset boards. These boards will support the new 45nm Penryn core CPU's and the quad core counterpart of it.

I myself have a 29B E6300 and some Geil Ultra PC2-6400 on it's way to me and need to choose a Motherboard now. Since the only reason I'm going from Dual Core Opteron 939 to Core 2 Duo is future proofing (and it's going to be an inexpensive upgrade), I'm waiting out to see what P35 has to offer! :)

Although Asus P35 boards are on sale now, NDA on the P35 breaks the day after tomorrow, so expect to see other manufacturer's offerings soon. Either way, there's no harm in waiting as it could make current Core 2 Boards drop in price.

Funny, I am going from an s939 opterton as well :D
Yeah I just read about the new P35 chipset and I probably wont go for one as but will wait till it comes out as the prices for the 775 chipset should drop nicely.
You can never really build a future proof PC as things change SO quickly and often, especially as AMD and Intel are constantly battling with each other.
But I think going Quad-Core will be pretty future proof as nothing will push a quadcore system for a long time.
Do you agree guys?

I'm not too sure if I want to go for P35 either. My main reason is because the CPU I plan to overclock needs very high FSB's for the speeds it's capable of, and if I choose a board which doesn't allow me to run memory unlinked to FSB, I'm not going to get the most out of the chip.

It's what's limiting me to the nForce 650i based boards right now. Then again I'd be sacrificing Penryn support just for a few hundred extra mhz.

So, it's a slight dilemma for me. My budget is also quite low as well which is almost ruling out P35.

I've rather given up on trying to build 'future-proof' PCs.

I find I am tending to change mb/cpu as a pair most often these days frequently RAM as well.
 
Yeah I know the feeling.
I have changed my MB twice in the past year and know I am planning to change it again.
But it is all part of the fun of having a PC.
Anyway has anyone else got any view of the best motherboard/RAM combo to go with either an E6600 or Q6600.
