Ok, so I've been thinking of doing this for a long time, and have only just got the ability to do it. My parents are giving me £400 to contribute to building my own computer, since I've been nagging them for at least 2 years, and they had bought me an iPad, and they bought my 3 brothers iPad's, however they heard I didn't like iPad's so mine was returned. So I have about £200 I'm willing to spend on a system myself, leaving me with a budget of around £600 more or less. I'm looking for as good a gaming machine I can get at that price. I'm new to this so I'm looking for a spec from some experienced people who'd be more knowledgeable when it comes to this, I did manage to get this together...

EVGA Nvidia GTX550Ti 1GB 192-Bit 3D Ready Graphics Card

Cooler Master Elite 430 - Mid tower - ATX - no power supply ( ATX / PS/2 ) - black - USB/Audio

WESTERN DIGITAL Caviar Blue WD5000AAKX 3.5" Hard Drive - 500 GB - 7200 rpm - 16 MB - SATA III

GIGABYTE GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 - LGA1155 Socket - Z68 Chipset - ATX

Intel Sandybridge i5-2500K Unlocked Core i5 Quad-Core Processor (3.30GHz, 6MB Cache, Socket 1155)

Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB 1600MHz CL9 DDR3 Vengeance Memory Two Module Kit

LiteOn IHAS224-19 Lite-On 24x DVD-RW LightScribe SATA

Corsair CMPSU-600CX 600W Power Supply

All that came to £620. I'd need an expert opinion or an expert spec though because I'm not sure if I could do better for the price. So what do you guys think?

sorry but have you already bought that or just a spec you came up with?

do you need an os(win7)?

use the voucher code OCUKXMAS if buying by 11.59pm tomorrow night to get free shipping + 5% so its ~£645 so still a bit overbudget but the 560ti 2gb is MUCH better for gaming then the 550ti, you can upgrade the cpu in the future with a k series sandybridge or ivybridge and the motherboard will allow you to overclock it plu can go sli in the future.

for the 5% offer details http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18355464

if you don't want/need sli ability then can drop the motherboard to http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-364-GI and save £15

I can tell you right now you will need a better gfx card. the 550 is ok, but for anything decent a 560 will have to do, put the processor down to an i3.

I do need an OS, but I can get it heavily discounted thanks to being a student. I think an extra £45 would do no harm, especially with the benefits that come with the extra price. Will probably upgrade to an i5 in the future.

Thanks!

I was looking at that one or above to be more suitable and also if u buy a coolermaster case from some range of them u get £20 off the psu? Dno if this deals still on i cant find it

EDIT: Sourced that for youu http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18347004

but you can't use the 5% off and coolermaster offer together. with the 5% off offer you get free shipping + 5% off the whole order which gives you double the saving compared to the £20 off offer.

Ok so I've pretty much made my mind up on the system I'm going to build. Final thing I'm wondering is whether it's a smart idea to go for a cheaper CPU such as the 3 listed below or pay the extra money for the extra quality?

This was the one that was specced for me

Although it's a bit on the pricy side, but is it worth the extra money?
