Hi chaps,

As the title really... has anyone got a good guide for a noob to building a system from scratch that also includes the various work you may need to do with the Mobo and drivers to ensure that everything is correctly recognised and running correctly?

I'll be fine putting a rig together, but I keep hearing about people that need to alter things in the BIOS to ensure that all the memory is recognised, and GPU drivers are up to date, etc. I have no idea where to start with this sort of thing and at what point they need to be checked?

Any good guides, or someone willing to write one!?!

Last time I looked for someone on the net, quite frankly, there wasnt one.

Things seem to have changed in the last few years, though.

Edit: Maybe they havent. Not that impressed with those links. Time to have a quick look for a bios setup guide, at least, for you.

Tbh I'm looking on the net at these bios guides, and they are all fairly useless. I suggest you simply have a 2nd PC already built, so that you can look any terms up in the bios that you dont know when you come across them. Once you have something specific to look for, or get stuck, you can then start a search, or ask on a forum for help.

Final edit: I would have a look to see if there is anything on youtube.

Thanks mate, I'll be building my system alongside my fully-functioning yet ancient laptop still connected to the internet - so no doubt I'll be posting in here as I encounter problems!

Generally, will I need to mess around with the BIOS much to get the basic system up and running? I assume the only essential thing to check is the boot sequence, to make sure that it boots from DVD first when installing a fresh OS?

you SHOULDNT need to do too much, simply put it together (theres plenty of videos on youtube re this tho it is fairly simple) then install windows, then your drivers that came with, generally mobo first then gfx then any others, then run windows update to bring it all up to date and jobs a good un. You only have to tinker with BIOS if OC'ing or if youre unlucky and theres a small compatibility issue. You dont even have to set boot priorities nowadays, its all automatic

Go into WHSmiths, they have a PC builder magazine for about £5, has everything you need to know.

I will my first pc the other day and had never done anything like it before but it was rather simple. Its like lego ^^

Lol, there is some irony in there somewhere about having to go and buy a magazine for information that doesn't seem to be easily accessible on the internet! Good idea though...

Lookin forward to ordering it all and getting started now.
