Building my 1st PC. Help required!

@Vida.......it looks like you are air cooling, just 1x 2.5 and 1x 3.5 drive, no 5.25 drives and a full length GPU. Based on that have you looked at the NZXT S340?

The Asus Z170 Deluxe has al sorts of bells and whistles which you may never use so if I were you I would decide what you want from the mobo and look for a board that meets that requirement, what about the Asus Z170-A, AsRock Z170 Extreme4 or the Gigabuyte Z170-SLI

That is a nice case, however the two posted below you just edge it for me, thanks for the suggestion though, it's definitely in line with what I want.

Good call on the motherboard, how do you think these two compare with each other?

Anyone have a clue why the images aren't working on my basket post? I just paste the BB code in whole.

They're missing the start bit that should go http: (or perhaps https: ) just before the //www.overcl.....

so:

(you can hit 'quote' to see exactly what is written here, it's just copy/pasted from yours with http: added to the start of each img)

Thanks David, must be a glitch as they didn't paste with everything else!

Quick Summary per component:

- CPU - Seems like the i5 is pretty damn close to the i7, and not worth the extra for what I'll be using the PC for.

- CPU Cooler - Happy with that fan, but I'm really considering water cooling. Is it worth investing in? Would like to know more about this.

- Motherboard - Seems a straight choice between the 2 I just posted^^.

- Case - Seems a straight choice between the 350d and 450d, 350d winning right now.

- RAM - Happy with this choice.

- PSU - Happy with this choice.

- Storage - Happy with SSD & HDD.

- GPU - If I was building it now I'd be happy with that one I think, but I would appreciate more advice on how I can recognise what makes a better GPU, and just all things GPU related to help me make a choice in the future when these new ones come out (when is this btw?)

You need a micro-atx size board if you go for the 350D.

If you only plan on running a single GTX 970 then you can go with a cheaper board such as the MSI Z170M Mortar.

The Corsair RMx is the improved version of the RM. It is a better psu.

Zotac 970 has a better (Longer) warranty of 5 years after you register it.

Thanks gents. I've swapped the PSU.

What kind of sacrifice do you make by using a micro-atx size motherboard, if any?

Also as a sidenote, what must I consider if I may want to use 2 monitors for my PC?

None really. You can still run dual cards on micro atx, and the 350D will fit most high end components inside it.

Obviously there isn't as much room inside as an ATX full tower, but with a fully modular psu then cable management should be just as easy.

Do you already have Monitors ?

I'm leaning toward the 450d and current motherboard I think. I should browse the micro-ATX motherboards before making a decision though. The 350d is very nice and I like the smaller size. I think I have the feeling that getting a micro one is a step down somehow, will see if my mind changes after looking at them.

When you say dual cards do you mean GPU's? Silly question I fear but would I need two cards to use 2 monitors? Sorry for all the questions, appreciate your help.

I have a monitor currently that I could use as a 2nd one. I'm not really asking about speakers/monitor/keyboards etc as I feel like I know enough about them to leave them out of the equation here.

Check out the Phanteks Enthoo Pro as well before you decide on the 450D. The Titanium Green version is currently down from £89.99 to £69.95 which is a bargain.

Yes by dual cards I mean 2 graphics cards (SLI for Nvidia) or (Crossfire for AMD)

A single graphics card can run multiple monitors. If you are just gaming on one at 1080p resolution then a single GTX 970 is fine. Do you know what the monitor is that you currently have ?

Nice I'm glad that one GPU can do the trick. The monitor I have now is 'LG Flatron E2260V'.

Based on what you've seen in the thread do you think I'd be getting a newly released GPU or for example the current one but at a cheaper price? If you can really answer that at all haha.

I didn't see the black version before (dislike the green), and whilst it is a nice case, it sits bigger than the 450d so doesn't really appeal to me any more. Heck I still could end up with a 350d. Now to check out those micro-ATX's...

Hello again folks. Could anybody recommend a good 2TB HDD? There seems to be mixed reviews for the Seagate one.

I currently have: RAM, HDD, OS, PSU, CPU Cooler & Motherboard

I'm not going to purchase the CPU, GPU, SSD or case until the last minute before I want to start the build. The first three so I don't lose out too much financially or technology wise, the case just because it'll take up space needlessly.

The only thing I still need to consider a lot is the GPU, which I've put off due to being told by some of you that there are new GPU's on the way, so I could either pick up a new one or an 'old' one for a better price. I still need a great deal of education and research on the GPU, barely have a clue about them.

Hello again ladies and gents,

I have a question re dual monitors. Do I need to reconsider my graphics card to achieve this? Anything to consider re the choice of monitor too?

Likely going for a 970 or 980 fyi. Thanks.

heya, just a suggestion on the case, is noise a factor?

i built a new rig in one of these https://www.overclockers.co.uk/fractal-design-define-s-midi-tower-case-black-window-ca-029-fd.html

it is the most slient case i have ever heard even under full load and keeps every thing running cool as well, can also easily undo 2 thumb screws and slide out the middle hdd bays to fit in big graphics cards if needed as well.

edit: also using this cpu cooler https://www.overclockers.co.uk/raijintek-themis-evo-professional-cpu-cooler-hs-007-rt.html on that same i5- 6600k you picked out there and running nice and cool :)

meh im drunk so heres a link to my upgrade thread : https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18725060 you really do not need to spend so much :)
