Hey all, I've decided my old Pentium D build needs replacing so I've drawn up a list of parts:

Asus P6T Deluxe Intel X58
Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz
Corsair 6GB DDR3 XMS3
BFG GeForce GTX 285 OC
Samsung SpinPoint F1 1TB
Pioneer BDC-S02BK 5x BD-ROM
Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 650W Modular PSU
Antec 900-2 Nine Hundred Two Gaming Case
Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Sound Card
Logitech Z-5500 THX Certified 5.1
Samsung T200 20" Widescreen LCD Monitor (1680x1050)

I'll be using the PC for heavy gaming, music, recording and watching Blu-rays, it will be running on Vista Home Premium x64 Just got a couple of questions regarding the hard-drives.

Would the rig be much faster if I was to install the OS onto a Raptor X and have the spinpoint F1 for storage? and
Would it be faster to have 2x 500gb spinpoints in raid0?

Sorry about the essay guys! Any other suggestions are welcome. Hope you can help.

John.

You can save cash on the graphics card - there's no need for a 285 @ 1680x1050 and they're very overpriced anyway for the performance.

A 4870 1GB or GTX260 would be a better choice and would perform nearly the same - saving you £120 or more.

nice setup i have to say, would think again about that psu though :p

and imo i would get a 150gig raptor x for os and the F1 for storage, then that would be blisteringly fast.!

and save some cash and get one of these instead :p

Would that be two F1s in raid or a single one?

Cheers.

Ok, so taking into consideration all the suggestions, I've come up with this:

Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz
Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler
Corsair 6GB DDR3 Dominator PC3-12800C8 1600MHz
BFG GeForce GTX 285 OC (666Mhz)
Western Digital VelociRaptor 150GB
2x Samsing Spinpoint F1 320Gb (raid0)
OCZ EliteXStream 800w
Antec 900-2 Nine Hundred Two case
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium
Logitech Z-5500 THX Certified
Sony BDU-X10S Blu-Ray Reader
Dell SP2309W 23" Widescreen LCD Monitor

All running on Windows Vista Home Premium x64

With regards to the case, is it going to be able to fit all this hardware in? and do the case fans come supplied with dust filters?

I haven't picked a mobo up yet cos' I'm torn between This and this Their both at the same price and I can't see any difference in features. Which would be the better choice?

Cheers.

Why not get 2 64Gb SSD's and raid0 em for OS? The samsung ones smoke any normal Hdd while not having the problems of the OCZ SSD's.

Thats gonna be pretty pricey, I might be able to stretch the budget to one SSD, any recommendations?

And can anyone help me out with the mobo? I'm pretty sure the P6T is the better option.

GTX285 is a bit overpriced IMO, if I was gonna spend over £300 on a GPU I'd go for the 4870x2.

I'd be wary of the 23" monitor as it is 16:9 not 16:10, and such resolutions maybe not be available in poorly coded games. Like others, I'm a bit concerned that you're spending so much on a system and yet looking to cut corners on the one piece of it you spend all your time looking at :)

Well I have the Dell SP2309W 23" and it's great (not to mention it only cost me £140)... Could spend all day canvasing for opinions and all that :)

I've used 16:9 for months now, not had a problem with it yet, it isnt a factor to worry about.

I echo what others are saying about your graphics card choice though.

BFG GeForce GTX 285 OC (666Mhz)

OCZ EliteXStream 800w

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium

Sony BDU-X10S Blu-Ray Reader

I would get:

4870x2 --> I think better value than 285
Corsair or Be Quiet! --> More reliable
Asus Xonar D2X --> Excellent with music and movies and will beat any X-Fi and the games excellent as well
Pioneer BDC-S02BK --> Faster drive than that Sony

Just my 2p :D

Ok, I'm buying the rig this week at some point. Just want to clear up on a couple things. I've changed the GPU choice to a 4870 X2 from recommendations, would I be right right in saying it offers the best performance/price ratio?

I'm scrapping the velocoraptors and/or the SSDs and going for 4 320GB spinpoint F1s in raid0. What I want to know is whether the on-board raid controllers on the P6T will be the bottleneck of this setup and whether it would be worth investing in a seperate controller?

Cheers.
