Building my own NAS...

Morning all,

About to return my WD My Book World II NAS, ongoing issues with the media server stalling, random disconnections and lack of functionality.

I've been looking for a replacement with the usual vendors (QNAP/Synology etc..) but nothing is leaping out as a good choice.

I already have plenty of external storage so considering perhaps building/buying a cheap nettop to use as a NAS - opinions?

The Acer Revo's are tempting but I cannot find out for sure whether they have gigabit ethernet or not (my home lan is Gigabit). Budget wise I have 150-200 to spend on this little project, I dont need any hard drives, just the box.

At the moment I'm using my iMac as the server but this isn't very power efficient and I lose all server capabilities if I reboot into Windows for gaming or suchlike.

Recommendations please :)
Cheers,
Adam

This is a project I will be working on building a NAS server from the FreeNAS distribution (free).
I have a spare amd xp2600 pc with 512mb ram and 80Gb hard disk + 250Gb disk, no monitor, keybd or mouse. Maybe run slightly underclocked with passive cooling, remove floppy, one optical and any unnecessary cards.
I intend to run this attached to my router either wired or wireless and use a webGUI to access the setup and configuration. I will run it with the two disks then add raid and other drives as necessary.

Hopefully a free solution for storing and sharing files on my network.

Revo is gigabit E

anyone know - would a Revo with a USB hdd attached to it make a faster NAS than the off the shelf ones? (WD Mybook etc)
