Hi Guys,

I am looking at building a new desk for myself, utilising the space better than my current desk.

What would be a good thing to use as the actual surface/desk top?

Thanks

(Apologies if GD isn't the correct place for this...)

Depends what you are trying to achieve really. Go to a local timber merchant and look at available wood, or try to find a nice worktop offcut or similar.

Walk into Ikea - they sell various sizes of worktop just for desks and can be as cheap as £20.

Then add the rest if you have DIY skills.

What ever you want, it really depends how much money you want to spend and what shape/size you need.

Cheapest will be laminated chip board, then you have the cheaper solid wood, then probably toughened glass, then the expensive hard woods.

Or build one out acrylic and put the computer inside. Save space and gets rid of the stupid huge ugly cases. Although expect it to come in at several hundred+

I built my own and I've just realised what a mess it is -

As you can see it is a kitchen work surface

On a slightly more helpful note, if you intend to build an actual desk, ie with legs etc that you can move around I would use a double thickness of 18mm MDF, and wooden legs then paint the whole lot. If you are just erecting a worktop type construction any DIY store will sell work tops in different lengths (thick chip board with formica finish) and adjustable chrome legs for the front. Ikea do also do worktops but they tend to be quite flimsy, they use a hard cardboard honeycomb construction, which is good enough for a monitor etc but don't try sitting on it.

I quite fancy a black marble desk

Feeling it might be cheaper to buy a small castle though.
