Hi all,

I have that 2 year itch again! So chirstams will come early.

I will be using it for gaming at high res on my current 2500x1600 dell 30" so need good gfx.

Not kept too up to date this my last build so was thinking along the lines of:

CPU
Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz Socket 1366 D0 stepping 8MB Cache OEM

Mobo
ASUS Rampage II GENE Republic of Gamers X58 Socket 1366

Gfx
XFX HD 5970 Black Edition 2GB DDR5

Mem
Corsair 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz XMS3 Memory CL9(9-9-9-24)

PSU
Will be swapping out my 1000w from old machine

Case
Undecided?? Offers??

Boot drive
Intel X25M

HDD
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - How much difference does cache make here?

Any adice / improvements / better value items for same speeds would be very welcome. Hoping to order it all today

:)))

Thanks,

Melks

Any reason for the m-atx board? Probably best off getting a good full ATX board like the P6T Deluxe.

See this is why advice is so valuable!

So something like the

ASUS P6T SE iX58 Socket 1366 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

I want to try and push the 920 to over 3.5 Ghz so was also thinking of this cooler:

Corsair H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler

Looks good, i asked a similar question a few days ago.
Check out the 5970 thread in the graphics room as they are talking about cases big enough to take that mammoth card!

I'd go for the P6T vanilla personally (well, I've got one and it's pretty good); whilst there isn't much difference between it and the SE it does support SLi which could come in handy for you in the future.

The H50 is quite a good cooler if you mount it properly. Should be good for 4ghz or so.

Excellent so, no know issues with these mobo? I had a p5nt-deluxe before with vista and it blue screened when you tired to install more than 2gb of memory!!

I have a CoolerMaster Cosmos on my old PC which is very spacious and quite, but I fancy something more agressively styled this time.

Also has anyone tried a dual monitor setup if one of them is a Dell 30"? I know the HD5970 has Eyefinity but is it ok with such a big main monitor.

Just seen the prices go up for the HD5970 as well :(

why the 920,have you not looked at the other cpu's like i5's if it just for gaming and not number crunching or benchtesting, seems a a waste of money if its just for gaming.also there the 860 which is a good chip for gaming and has the added bonus if the hyper threading if needed.also you would not notice much differance after 3.8ghz for gaming i play my games on 2.8ghz and runs like a dream.

Would you really need a 5970? i mean its a beasty card but is it really worth it? it is cheaper and slightly better performance wise to get two 5850s in crossfire (well, from all the benchmarks i've seen) PS, it will be fine for a dual setup

I see your point. So what is the realistic difference between the i5 750 and i7 920. Can they both clock high? There is a £65 price difference which represent around 35% of the i7 price! I doubt you are getting anything like 35% performance, so what benefits does i7 really offer over i5?

If I am going HD5970, will the i5 have enough bandwidth to not be the bottleneck?

I maybe wrong but i remeber hearing that the i5 actualy clocked easier and performance wise for games was a better bet in terms fo value for money. You can see from ocs own overclocked bundles that the i5 is capable of been overclocked to 4gigs. Ive jsut ordered the I5 overclocked bundle for £389 think its a great bundle and will kill everything with a nice graphics card or cards in tow.
