Hey guys, good to be back on the forum, not been looking at hardware for some time now.. busy with cisco and all...

Putting together a new computers, housed in one of the new Antec 1200... anyone seeing my previous posts will know i like my 900's :)

Here is a Rough spec for now...

Q9550 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-203-IN
(assuming this is the newer E0 one.. after reading some month old posts)

The motherboard is depending on whether i go ATi or Nvidia at this point..Will be Nforce 7 Series (DDR3) or an X38 or X48 (DDR3) .. i like Asus..

The three posibilities there are

X38

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

X48

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-268-AS

Nforce

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-002-XF&tool=3

Then memory, will be going DDR3... only 4GB for now.. will go for 2 x 2 Gig sticks.. who knows, may expand that. will be get Vista 64bit

OCZ 4GB DDR3 (2x2GB)

-Will edit with rest of spec in a bit- 02/09 17:44

The graphics card is a toss up between the 280's or the 4870 / x2.... need to look into it in more detail... get some benchmarks... anyone adivse there is appreciated.

+ Oh and i will just add, i highly doubt i will be water cooling. have no experience for it, and in other machines havent had the need.. this is a good air cooling tower anyway, and the CPU can have a treat and get a tuniq or thermalright.

Is there a reason you want ddr3? Also ive heard the nforce boards are cack compared to the x48/x38! Are you definatly going to be crossfiring or sli'ing?

No, and i have heard similar.. i have 2 x x38 boards, which i love.. so am biased..

I am pushing toward the x38 / x48... probably should go x48, its the newest one. hehe.

I dont think there is any need on buying ddr3 at the moment you are better spending your money on a better gfx card. X48 are v nice boards but does limit you to either one nvidia card or having to use ati for multiple cards.

its more the.. spend £40 more on RAM and go with the newer techonology.. my asus maximus machines is using DDR3.. love the performance, have found it to peform better with some tasks...as for 'speed vs latency' myths and facts that in play.. its 5-5-5-15 against 7-7-7-20...

If i go with the X48, which i am inclined to do, as in the past i prefered ATi and probably will go that way, i may as well get the DDR3 for futures sake.

plus... just looked up this nice looking memory and it won on TomsHardwarea aginst some of the other DDr3 Competitors...

However if you are only going to use one card you might aswell buy a p45 board

Wasn't aware the newer P45's supported the new yorkfield processors, interesting to know, but i want the oppertunity to Xfire.... ( providing we go with ATi )

TBH mate i dont know much about ddr3 but what ive picked up is that its not worth it at the moment plus when nehalem comes out it will be tri channel memory, so its not really maming it future proof either

It wasnt worth it, but the price has met the performance from what i have seen and looking at the price of the memory i have listed....

On a side note.. I know Nothing of Nehalem, will have to research that but dont want to wait for a new tech to be released.. trialed.. tested.. improved.. Stuff always improving and coming out, cant wait forever :)...

Besides.. if the Large Hadron Collider goes wrong, ill only have another month to play with this thing anyway, before we all go boom. :P

LMAO! fair enough! On the memory side if you want to discuss it more id suggest talking on the memory forum to Cob, he seems to know what hes talking about! And yeah the nehalem stuff will be a while before it's a reasonable price and has been compared to the current market!

Yeah exactly.. fair enough :)

Soo.. i think its just the age old Battle of graphics cards.. to worry about now :)

Yup always a tricky one especially at the moment with the 4870 and 280 so close together. What res monitor do you use?

well... usually run at 1680x1050... then i also run it on a HDTV .. and posibly a new monitor.. so it could be up to 1900x1200..

I use dual monitor a lot on the others comps, maybe get a second monitor for this one as well.. however, and gaming that will be done will probably be one screen :)

Unless its eve.. then two eve windows running on each monitor.. hehe

yeah i use a dell 24" and im tempted by the bfg gtx280.

"Unless its eve.. then two eve windows running on each monitor.. hehe"
Thats just greedy!

But yeah i like a dual monitor setup as i use the monitor with my laptop when at uni.

Four eve account to be run. the more screen space the better !:P

Greedy.. pfft hehe.

looking at the 4870 X2's now... blows your mind. 2gig of memory in a single card. lol.

hmm dont we all, you could always get the 4870 1gb and then get another later if you wanted a total of 2gb however i think the bridge in the 4870 x2 is better than just normall cf.

Yeah, that makes sense and is tempting, however, i want to find out about heat, i dont want to have to replace its cooling and im not water cooling.. so that beast better behave. hehe.

Will do a search on them in the Graphics forum now :)
