CPU - £111.61 - INTEL E8400 3.0Ghz
GFX - £140.99 - LEADTEK GEFORCE 9800 GTX+
RAM - £58.74 - GEIL 2x2GB PC-6400

DVD - £15.26 - SAMSUNG S223F
HDD - £35.24 - SEAGATE 250GB 16MB CACHE
OS -£62.26 -WINDOWS VISTA PREMIUM 64 BIT OEM

TOTAL - £676.54 (included shipping)

I'm buying half and half from 2 retailers, Overclockers.co.uk and *cough cough*. Are any of the components overkill compared to the rest or is anything overpriced/uncompatible?

1 friend suggested changing the motherboard to an nvidia nforce 750i/780i so i can go Sli because this is more of a Ati mobo.

firstly remove that competitor

maybe get a 320GB HDD over a 250 as it isnt that much more

change the GPU to a 4850 as this will give you the option to crossfire if you want.

i would stick with an intel MB as they are generally regarded as being better especially if you want to overclock

Most importantly, change that 9800 for a 4850 or 4870 and stay ATI. ATI are better bang for buck atm, as are the Intel motherboards. Unless you pay top dollar for an Nvidia Mobo, the product you get will most likely be ****. The Intel boards are far, far better than the Nvidia ones.

Also unless you sit looking at your case a lot of the time, i would change the case to either antec 1200 at £105 or the antec 300 at £35. I would rather go for the 300 as it looks better to me, great case for money as it includeds good things like the dust filters and cable management holes where the 900 does not have these.
Also you may want to get a decent heatsink and fan. Look at the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 + Xigmatek Crossbow ACK-I7751 kit. Which can be found for £25 for both of those bits.
And for the same price get the Sammung F1 320GB which is at £25.
And yeah same about the 4850. The IceQ edition would be great.

4850 or 4870 gfx card, depending on what resolution you use and your budget. And def a 320gb hard drive - higher density platters = faster :) Otherwise it all looks good :)

Okay thanks for all the advice guys.

So to summarize:

320GB hd instead of 250GB - Fair enough
4850/4870 instead of 9800GTX+ - Okay, GTX+ seems to beat 4850 in performance reviews but it is a crossfire mobo so ATI is definetly the way to go.
Antec 300 instead of Antec 900 - Sounds fair, will the bigger graphics cards fit in here yes?

If I were to switch cases that would save me £30 which I can use to upgrade the gfx so the only question left is 4850 1024MB vs 4870 512MB?

4870 512MB

A 4850 will fit in an Antec 300 but it gets very close to the hard drive cages, although if you only have one or two drives it would be OK.
Interesting article in current PC Format re SLI and Crossfire might be worth a look. General point was that it may not be worth it and better off buying one very good card.

Yeh I think dual/tri cards are not for me since it costs too much and I'd rather wear my pc down for 2-3 years then buy a new one.

So will a 4870 fit into an antec 300? :P
